Boys Basketball

Coach: J.P. Yorkey (fifth year)

Last year’s record: 9-9 regular season, fell to Morse in double-OT in quarterfinals

Key players: Quinn Piland (sr., F); Nick Hall (sr., F/C); Jack Lesure (jr., G/F); Nate Smith (jr., G/F); Marcus Devoe (jr., G/F); Nick Wandishin (jr., F/C)

Outlook: Yorkey sees lots to like about his squad this season, calling them “a great group of kids” with good size, as well as some talent and athleticism. “If we play as hard as we can every night,” Yorkey says, “we think that we can be one of the better teams in our conference.”

Coach: Dave Lepage

Last year’s record: 8-8

Key players: Davis Turner (sr., D); Noah Davis (sr., D); Peter Misner (sr., F); Even Kellough (sr., F); Huxley Lovering (so., F); David Long (so., G)

Key games: Thornton, Cheverus, Westbrook, Bonny Eagle, Windham

Outlook: Lepage’s squad combines a strong group of returning players. They hail from three disparate schools, however, which means chemistry is among their primary struggles. “Hard work is necessary for us to compete day in, day out, and we have to believe in ourselves as a team unit, not a group of individuals,” Lepage says. He looks forward to the team’s schedule, which he finds nicely balanced between top teams like Thornton and Cheverus and developing programs like Westbrook, Bonny Eagle and Windham.

Alpine Skiing

Coach: Charles O’Brien

Key athletes: Taylor Davis

Outlook: Davis is O’Brien’s only skier this year, so the pair will be able to focus strictly on Davis’s technique and performance. “With no depth this season, it will be tough,” says O’Brien, “But with hard work and focus, I’m hoping Taylor can compete with the best of the high school racers in Maine.”

Indoor Track

Coaches: Mark Snow & Dana Caron

Last year’s record: Girls seventh at WMCs, boys 14th

Key athletes: Kate Hall (sr.), Kyle DeSouza (sr.), Kolin Wyman (sr.), Audrey Blais (jr.), Hannah Parsons (jr.), Keyana Prescott (jr.), Nick Scarlett (jr.), Joey Beaulieu (so.)

Key Meets: WMCs

Outlook: The girls’ side of LRHS track program naturally centers around Kate Hall, a nine-time state champion in the long jump, 55 meters and 200 meters. Audrey Blais will anchor the distance runs, Parsons will bolster the sprinting, and Prescott will lead on the hurdles. “75 percent of the girls team is new to indoor track and field,” Snow says. “It will be fun to watch them learn the events and improve throughout the season.” On the boys’ side, the picture is somewhat different. With no equivalent to Kate Hall for the boys to rally around, the responsibility for tallying points will fall equally on all shoulders. Luckily, according to Snow, “The boys team has doubled in size from last year…we hope to at least double our point total.”
