Outlook: “We’re going to try to play a fast-paced game with our focus on the defensive end,” says Berthiaume, adding that “our transition game will be key to our success.” Berthiaume stresses that this year’s competition is going to be talented. “A number of teams have improved from last year, so we won’t be overlooking anyone.”

Boys Hockey

Coach: Jon Portwine

Last year’s record: 18-4, Western Maine Class B Champions

Key players: Andrew Schmidt (sr., D); Matt Hooker (sr., D); Jordan Ward (sr., F); Michael Chapin (sr., F); Travis Mansir (sr., F); Carl Bear (jr., F)

Key games: Greely, Scarborough, Kennebunk

Outlook: The Rams posted a fantastic season in 2013-’14, winning B West and taking second in the State. Graduation, however, claimed six seniors from the team’s critical core. Returning this year, however, are defensive keys Schmidt and Hooker, as well as a bevy of strong attackers. Mansir, Bear and Ward on a line should put up good numbers, but Portwine is watching for the next two lines to emerge from the mix of younger players. Goaltending is young this year as well, and faced with big skates to fill – Justin Broy, last year’s standout between the pipes, is gone now – but Portwine remains optimistic. “While this year’s roster may contain a lot of new faces, Gorham still figures to be a contender in Western Maine Class B,” he says.

Coach: Nat Germond

Last year’s record: 7-11

Key players: Charlotte Smith, Meghan Demers, Allison Rullo, Evelyn Turnbaugh, Mary Adams, Mackenzie Collins

Key games: Biddeford

Outlook: “Last season, we achieved our goal of making it to the postseason,” Germond says, “and lost a heartbreaker, 1-0, at Biddeford.” The squad’s primary focus, then, will be on returning to the playoffs, and this year advancing further.

Boys Indoor Track

Coach: Jason Tanguay

Last year’s record: 16-4

Key athletes: Ben Foster (sr.), Tommy Pequinot (sr.), Emerson Fox (jr.), Connor Goodall (jr.), Collin Jones (jr.), Branden Kuusela (jr.), Spencer Linscott (jr.), Jesse Southard (jr.), Ethan Orach (so.)

Key meets: Southwesterns

Outlook: “We have about 50 boys out for the team this year, and almost half of these are new,” says Tanguay, who finds the mix exciting, but recognizes that it will require much learning across the season. He remains optimistic, however, that the Rams will be competitive. “I look forward to seeing our veterans lead a large group of newcomers.”

Girls Indoor Track

Coach: John Caterina (15th year)

Last year’s record: 6-8, ninth in the SMAA, 11th in Class A

Key athletes: Megan Baker (sr.), Kristin Benson (sr.), Leeanna Gray (sr.), Blanca Monson (sr.), Abby Perkins (sr.), Kayleigh Smith (sr.), Maddie DeWitt (jr.), Jamie Justkiewicz (so.), Audrey Perreault (so.), Heather Woodbury (so.), Meadow Fortier, Sophie Hendrix, Bridget Rossignol, Maddie Rossignol, Anna Slager

Outlook: The Rams have a solid mix of experience and fresh talent, according to Caterina. Benson was runner-up at States in the 200m last season, and Slager showed strongly in cross country this past fall, taking seventh at States. “Gorham could very well be the surprise team in the very competitive SMAA this winter,” says Caterina.

Boys basketball coach Mark Karter, cheering coach Julie Dvilinsky and swimming coach Morgan Dorsey couldn’t be reached.
