Boys Basketball

Coach: Phil Bourassa (sixth season)

Last year’s record: 19-2

Key players: Ben Malloy, Nick Dubay, Zach Dubiel, Matt Smith

Key games: “The next one,” says Bourassa.

Outlook: Bonny Eagle has heartbreakingly fallen in the Western Maine Final for the past few years, and so is looking to finally take the next step and move on to States. Graduation pried some important cogs from Bourassa’s winning machine – including towering center Nate Alexander and superstar Dustin Cole – but a mountain of talent nevertheless returns in his eight seniors, four of them with regular experience as starters. Malloy can drain threes with the best of them. “The Scots are poised to make a run at the title this season,” Bourassa says. “Experience, tough defense, and a fast-paced running game will be what the Scots rely on this season.”

Girls Basketball

Coach: Scott Regan

Last year’s record: 6-12

Key players: Samantha Maxfield (sr., G); Cassidy Emery (jr., G); Megan Morash (sr., F)

Key games: Deering, Cheverus

Outlook: Every member of last year’s young varsity squad returns this season, another round of experience under their belts and hungrier than ever. The Lady Scots will look to play an aggressive game both on offense and on defense. Morash’s return, after she missed a season with an ACL injury, is welcome. Deering and Cheverus are the team’s first two games; Deering is a preseason favorite, and Cheverus handled Bonny Eagle twice last year – once in the playoffs – so Regan’s girls will measure their progress in these matchups. The Scots should improve on their 2013-’14 record.

Cheering

Coach: Brandi Bradley

Last year’s record: Seventh at Western Maine Regionals

Key athletes: Lauren Collins, Karly Cannell

Key meets: SMAAs, Western Maine Regionals

Outlook: The Scots sport a short roster this year, just 13 girls and three seniors. However, they’ll continue pushing their performances, with more tumbling and more challenging stunts. “We hope to score in the top six in Western Maine in order to attend States,” Bradley says.

Boys Hockey (Bonny Eagle/Massabesic/Old Orchard Beach combined)

Coach: Loren Blair

Key players: Justin Miles, Kyle Whitman, Matt Bridges, Tanner McClure

Key games: Windham, Westbrook

Outlook: This trio of schools combines for the first time. While Bonny Eagle fielded their own team last year, and Massabesic/Old Orchard Beach worked together, neither found much success in competitive Class A. Both squads had their standouts, however, so the pooling of all their talent and resources could really help this new amalgam climb the ranks. Windham and Westbrook, also struggling programs looking to develop, will prove good yardsticks by which Blair’s boys can measure their progress. Blair himself is optimistic, saying: “We’re looking to have a very competitive varsity program.”

Girls Hockey (Bonny Eagle/Gorham combined)

Coach: Nat Germond

Last year’s record: 7-11

Key players: Charlotte Smith, Meghan Demers, Allison Rullo, Evelyn Turnbaugh, Mary Adams, Mackenzie Collins

Key games: Biddeford

Outlook: “Last season, we achieved our goal of making it to the postseason,” Germond says, “and lost a heartbreaker, 1-0, at Biddeford.” The squad’s primary focus, then, will be on returning to the playoffs, and this year advancing further.

Swimming

Coaches: Morgan Gryskwicz (head), David Gryskwicz (asst.), Lynn Walker (volunteer)

Key athletes: Megan Roy, Zack Gryskwicz

Key meets: States

Outlook: Though the Scots swim team remains a small school of fish in the grand scheme of things, it is the largest it’s been in several years, which gives Morgan Gryskwicz great hope. “We’re a small team with incredible drive,” she says. “With the support of my assistant coach, volunteer, boosters group, AD, parents and other coaches, who give us so much help, we have made this team one to watch!”

Boys Indoor Track

Coach: Greg Wilkinson

Key athletes: Eddie Maxwell (sr.), Joe Elsemiller (jr.), John Vedral (jr.), Jake Cook (so.), Michael O’Clair (so.), Caleb Pendleton (so.), Lukkas Pierce (so.), Ben Steeves (so.), Shea Harrington (so.), Max Harris (fr.), Christian Tomison (fr.)

Outlook: The Scots are young on the track this year, but Wilkinson remains optimistic about their performance and looks forward to the fun of seeing them develop. Maxwell will anchor the team’s jumps, while Elsemiller and Vedral hold down the pole vault. With “an abundance of freshmen and sophomores who are quite talented,” according to Wilkinson, the team is likely to show its real strength in the junior division. Cook and Pierce are shot-putters, O’Clair a hurdler, and Pendleton a middle-distance runner. Steeves runs middle distances and longer. “Hopefully we can qualify a number of these individuals for participation at the State meet!” says Wilkinson.

Girls Indoor Track:

Coach: Chris Strout

Last year’s record: 13-8

Key athletes: Kyuanna Libby, Elisabeth Redwood, Kialeigh Marston

Key meets: Southwesterns, States

Outlook: “The team has good numbers this year, with talent in almost all events,” says Strout. “We have Kyky and Kialeigh covering our distance events. Elisabeth, with the help of hurdler Anna Weyand and freshman Kaylee Collins, will be anchoring our sprints. And our throws group looks to be our deepest event group this year.” Jamie Gammon, who missed last year due to injury, can be expected to produce big numbers for the Scots. The team should compete well at large meets, though they’re still likely to struggle against large squads like Thornton, Scarborough and Westbrook.

Wrestling

Coach: Greg Gonyea

Key athletes: Russell Barlow (sr.), Addison Bryant (sr.), Cody Mains (so.), Joe Kenney (fr.), Caleb Frost (fr.)

Outlook: While Bonny Eagle is not necessarily a “wrestling school,” Gonyea’s tutees tend to perform well as individuals. His key athletes are certainly ones to watch.
