A 24-year-old Standish man faces charges of indecent conduct and failure to stop for police after he allegedly exposed himself to a woman at a North Windham store then drove erratically in an effort to escape sheriff’s deputies, police said.

Police say Andrew J. Chapman of 16 Deerfield Circle pulled in to a parking space near the Goodwill store on Landing Road in North Windham at about noon Thursday alongside a woman who had just pulled in to a spot, said Sgt. Peter Fulton.

The man exposed himself and started masturbating so that the woman could see him, Fulton said. The man then drove off but the woman was able to give police a description of the red Chevrolet Cavalier he was driving.

A Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted the car and tried to pull it over but Chapman was driving dangerously in an effort to avid them. Police determined his driving put the public at risk so the chase was called off, Fulton said.

However, a short time later, a deputy spotted the car on its soft-top roof where it had crashed on Middle Jam Road near the Standish town line. Fulton said it’s remarkable, given the significance of the crash, that Chapman received only minor injuries.

The deputy arrested Chapman and took him to Cumberland County Jail in Portland where he is being held on $2,000 bail.
