The Bonny Eagle Scots football season ended in Saco on Saturday, one game shy of a return to the state championship contest, as the defending state Class A champions fell to top-ranked Thornton Academy, 30-14, in the Western Maine final on Saturday.

Senior Nikk Pierce (52) was in the backfield almost as fast as Trojan running back Demel Ruff (33) who was dropped for a loss on the play.Well-protected by his O-line, Scots quarterback Zach Dubiel (7) rolls left looking for running back Matt Smith (32). The two would connect for a 24-yard touchdown play.After pulling in a pass from quarterback Zach Dubiel, the Scots big senior running back, Matt Smith, runs 24 yards untouched into the end zone for Bonny Eagle’s first score.Everyone on the Bonny Eagle sideline had a good look as Cam Theberge (3) makes a leaping catch on a quick pass into the flat for a short gain.With running back Matt Smith (32) leading the way, quarterback Zach Dubiel (7) heads left on a keeper play. The duo provided both of Bonny Eagle’s touchdowns. Smith on a 24-yard pass from Dubiel. Then Dubiel would score late in the game on a one-yard run for the Scots’ second and final TD.There were two great pass catches in the game, one by each team. For the Scots, senior Ben Malloy (20) displayed great concentration tipping the ball away from a well-positioned defender, then tracking it and pulling it in before hitting the groundSomewhere under the swarm of Bonny Eagle defenders is a TA running back.
