SCARBOROUGH – Voters in Scarborough returned only one incumbent to the Town Council in a crowded race for the three open seats. Kate St. Clair was the sole member of the governing board to be returned for three more years.
Residents also chose former councilor Shawn Babine and political newcomer Peter Hayes, who was vocal about what he called the non-transparency of decision-making in recent years. Babine was the top vote getter with 4,340. Hayes received 4,280 and St. Clair got 4,026.
In the three-way race for two seats on the Board of Education, incumbents Christine Masengill and Kelly Noonan Murphy were both returned to office over declared write-in candidate Michael Turek. Massengill got 5,635 votes and Murphy received 5,921.
There was also a race for the Scarborough Sanitary District board and residents chose to return all three incumbents. Board chairman Jason Greenleaf was the top vote getter. He received 5,942. Charles Andreson got 5,407 and Robert McSorley received 4,308.
Scarborough also had two bond questions on the local ballot. Residents approved the purchase of a new fire truck in a vote of 6,129 in favor to 3,771 against, but voted down a full property revaluation with 6,715 voting against and 3,088 for the spending.
In the race for the Maine Legislature, Scarborough voters chose Republican Karen Vachon over Democrat Paul Aranson for the House 29 seat vacated by Amy Volk. Vachon received 2,541 votes and Aranson got 2,456.
In the House 28 race, voters chose incumbent state Rep. Heather Sirocki over her Democratic challenger Dwight Ely.Sirocki got 2,503 votes and Ely received 1,932. In the Senate 30 race Volk, a Republican, was elected over incumbent state Sen. James Boyle, the Democrat. Volk got 8,949 votes and Boyle received 7,669.
In the race for governor, Scarborough voters supported incumbent Paul LePage over Congressman Mike Michaud and Independent Eliot Cutler. LePage got 4,977 votes, Michaud received 4,398 and Cutler got 1,033.
In the Congressional races, Scarborough voters supported U.S. Sen. Susan Collins over challenger Shenna Bellows. Collins received 7,365 votes and Bellows got 2,950. Local voters also chose to return District 1 Congresswoman Chellie Pingree to Washington. She got 5,493 votes and challenger Isaac Misiuk got 3,736.
Voters in Scarborough supported the ban on bear baiting, although the measure was defeated statewide. The vote was 5,628 in favor and 4,646 against locally. Like the rest of the state, Scarborough voters also supported all of the statewide bond questions.
