BOYS
Iid Sheikh-Yusuf, Deering cross country: Sheikh-Yusuf, a senior, won the Western Class A cross country individual title Saturday with the fastest time of any class winner at Twin Brook Recreational Area in Cumberland. He covered the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 11.58 seconds. The Rams finished seventh out of 16 teams.
Honorable mention
Henry Curran, South Portland soccer: The senior goalie made 15 saves in a 1-0 upset of No. 3 Gorham in Tuesday’s Western Class A quarterfinals. Curran also stopped three shots in a 4-0 preliminary-round win over Kennebunk.
Connor Aube, Falmouth football: Aube rushed for 134 yards on 24 carries and scored three touchdowns as the Yachtsmen beat Greely, 42-12. Aube also caught six passes for 80 yards.
Mackenzie Hoglund, Cheverus soccer: Hoglund scored one goal and assisted on the other as the No. 7 Stags upset No. 2 Falmouth 2-1 in the Western Class A quarterfinals Tuesday.
GIRLS
Katherine Leggat-Barr, Greely cross country: A sophomore, Leggat-Barr won the Western Class B title in 19 minutes, 46.76 seconds, finishing 35 seconds ahead of runner-up Grace Cowles of Yarmouth. Leggat-Barr, who played junior varsity soccer last fall, was the only girl regardless of class to break 20 minutes at Twin Brook.
Honorable mention
Cara McCluskey, Kennebunk soccer: McCluskey scored two first-half goals and added another in the second half as No. 6 Kennebunk beat No. 11 McAuley in a Western Class A preliminary-round game.
Isabel Stehli, Portland soccer: Stehli buried the Bulldogs’ final penalty kick to secure a 2-1 overtime victory over rival Deering in the preliminary round of the Western Class A tournament.
Maria Valente, Gray-New Gloucester soccer: Possessor of one of the strongest throw-ins in the state, Valente used that skill to set up one goal, then scored herself in the No. 10 Patriots’ 3-0 Western Class B preliminary-round win against Lake Region.
