Lewiston police said Saturday that an armed man who was shot by officers Friday night remained hospitalized and an investigation into what led to the shooting is continuing.

Lt. Michael McGonagle said Albert Crowley, 20, was being treated for what were considered non-life-threatening injuries at Central Maine Medical Center.

Officials at the Lewiston hospital said Saturday evening they would not confirm that Crowley was there and said they had no information on his condition.

Police said Crowley was shot in Kennedy Park by officers who were responding to a report of a domestic disturbance at 8:05 p.m. Friday at 1 Knox St., which is next to the park. A female caller at that address told police Crowley had assaulted her, had left the apartment and might be armed with a gun, according to a news release issued late Friday by Police Chief Michael Bussiere.

Bussiere said officers located the suspect near the intersection of Knox and Spruce streets.

He “failed to heed the verbal commands of the officers and brandished a firearm,” Bussiere said in the release. “During the confrontation he was shot by the officers.”

McGonagle said Crowley is not expected to be charged until he is discharged from the hospital. He said the investigation to determine what charges to file is continuing.

The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Cpl. Michael Dumond, a 13-year veteran of the police force; Officer Brian Bourgoin, who has been with the police department for five years; and Officer Zachary Provost, who has been with the force for two years. As is standard procedure, they were placed on paid administrative leave, and the Maine Attorney General’s Office is investigating the shooting.

McGonagle said the officers would be put on “light duty” when they return to work. Lewiston police officials will meet with an investigator from the Attorney General’s Office on Monday, McGonagle said.

The shooting Friday night was the ninth officer-involved shooting in Maine this year.
