The Republican party, many Republican candidates, many Republicans currently holding office, and many Republican voters are actively profiling individuals and groups as “illegals” for political leverage. The widespread use of the term “illegals” by Republicans is nothing less than a purposefully crafted, veiled racial slur, part of racist tactics and agendas.
Racism has absolutely no place in American values or American politics.
As a resident of House District 55 (Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, and Richmond), I know where the Democratic party and its candidates stand on the issue of racism. For this and many other reasons, I am voting a straight Democratic ticket on Tuesday, November 4th.
If you are currently an undecided voter in one or all races at this time, I urge you to carefully examine parties and candidate’s position on racism. Ask them about their position regarding the plight of individuals seeking legal asylum in this country in accordance with current laws.
Join me in casting your vote for: Alice Elliott for Maine House District 55, Eloise Vitelli for Maine Senate District 19, David Sinclair for District Attorney, Shenna Bellows for Senate, Chellie Pingree for House of Representatives, and Mike Michaud for Governor.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
