I’d like to dispel the myth that a stand-alone Freeport School system will be bad for our athletic program. As a parent of a former three-season Falcon, I can assure you that FHS had athletic successes prior to consolidation. The maroon banners hanging in the gymnasium are proof enough.
Many people do not realize that the “Freeport Falcon” will likely be collateral damage of the recently passed bond. The Falcon mascot and maroon and white colors are an important part of Freeport history. We need to save the identity and heart of our community. These symbols are in jeopardy if withdrawal does not pass.
Ten years ago, Freeport did not have a football team. A group of passionate parents started the Gridiron Club and funded it privately. I am sure many folks enjoyed the imaginative fundraiser Cow Chip Bingo? These parents, coaches and players persevered, shared turf with Brunswick and did anything necessary to get a football program established here in Freeport. The Pownal Road Athletic Field was adapted for football and the Gridiron Club families built the concession stand. The football program was given official status prior to consolidation. Freeporters have a long history of making things happen.
Please vote yes to withdraw.
