I am the mother of three boys and this is my ninth straight year with a student at Freeport High School. The benefits from the RSU are obvious to our family. The youngest has had more academic opportunities, especially in science, stronger sports teams and a far more diverse social group, all the benefit of the RSU.

At the Oct. 14 Freeport Town Council meeting, I heard many pro-withdrawal speakers state that withdrawing from RSU 5 would be a “gamble.” The financial numbers are unclear so it’s a gamble, the number of Durham and Pownal students is a gamble and thus, our schools are a gamble. I am not willing to gamble with my tax dollars and especially not with our children’s education.

RSU 5 has momentum toward an even better school district, best shown in the approval of the high school renovation. Walk the halls of FHS, stand on the sidelines of a soccer or football game and you’ll get first-hand knowledge of the community that has been built. Our students are flourishing together. Let’s continue this great work. Please vote no on Nov. 4.
