Revolution beat Dynamo with two second-half goals

Lee Nguyen scored twice in the second half to lead the New England Revolution to a 2-1 victory over the host Houston Dynamo on Thursday night.

New England (16-13-4) is three points behind Eastern Conference leader D.C. United and three points ahead of third-place Sporting Kansas City.

In the 65th minute, Nguyen received a back-pass from Kevin Alston, took one touch to elude a defender and curled in a shot. He scored his 17th goal of the season in the 87th minute. A rebound fell to Darrius Barnes and he found an open Nguyen at the top of the 6-yard box.

Giles Barnes scored in the 37th minute for Houston (11-16-6).

PGA: Stewart Cink birdied seven of the final 11 holes for a 7-under 64 and a share of the first-round lead with Martin Laird in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at Las Vegas. Cink and Laird were both bogey free.

LPGA: Haeji Kang shot a 5-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead over five players, including three fellow South Koreans, after the first round of the LPGA’s KEB-Hanabank Championship at Tincheon.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Jyoti Randhawa shot a 6-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Hong Kong Open. Angelo Que was in second place.

WORLD MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP: Defending champion Graeme McDowell’s comeback fell short against Mikko Ilonen of Finland, who won 2 and 1 in their second pool match.

Henrik Stenson, the top seed in the 16-man event, closed eagle-birdie-birdie to beat Italy’s Francesco Molinari 2 and 1.

KREMLIN CUP: The top seeds crashed out in Moscow as Milos Raonic of Canada was eliminated by Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, and Dominika Cibulkova followed not long after in the women’s draw, falling to Vitalia Diatchenko of Russia, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Third-seeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia booked a quarterfinal with Andreas Seppi of Italy, and last year’s runner-up, Mikhail Kukushkin, knocked out fourth-seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy, 6-4, 6-2.

Just three seeded players reached the women’s quarterfinals, led by No. 4 Lucie Safarova. She’ll face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who beat Alison Riske of the United States, 6-2, 6-2.

ERSTE BANK OPEN: Andy Murray reached the quarterfinals at Vienna after a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win over Vasek Pospisil of Canada.

David Ferrer advanced to his 15th quarterfinal of the season after defeating Tobias Kamke of Germany, 7-5, 6-1.

STOCKHOLM OPEN: Top seed and former champion Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic beat Dustin Brown of Germany 7-5, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.

LUXEMBOURG OPEN: Fourth-seeded Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic rolled past Swedish qualifier Johanna Larsson 6-0, 6-2 to make the semifinals, where she’ll play Mona Barthel of Germany, who defeated Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands.

German Annika Beck and Czech Denisa Allertova advanced to the other semifinal.

BASKETBALL

WORLD CUP: Basketball’s international governing body said no positive doping tests were recorded at the World Cup or its other major championships.

FIBA said more than 300 samples were taken this year at the men’s World Cup, the women’s world championship and the Under-17 worlds for men and women.
