A Windham woman who ran a day care business from her home has been indicted on a charge of assaulting a child in her care.

Eleanor Arno, 55, of 33 Walter Partridge Road was indicted by a Cumberland County grand jury on a single count of assault on a child under the age of 6, the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

Arno allegedly committed the offense on a 3-year-old child on Aug. 25, according to the single-page indictment made available late Wednesday afternoon.

The indictment contains no other information about the case against Arno, which was investigated by the Windham Police Department.

John Martins, spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, said Arno surrendered her license to provide day care after being investigated by the state’s Division of Licensing and Regulatory Services.

“The DLRS did investigate a complaint of abuse and substantiated this complaint,” Martins said in an email late Wednesday afternoon.

Windham police did not return a phone message seeking details.

If convicted, Arno will face as much as five years in prison. A summons will be issued for her to appear in court to face the charge.
