Revolution playoff bound after tie with Montreal
Lee Nguyen scored in the 69th minute to give the New England Revolution the point they needed to clinch an MLS Eastern Conference playoff spot in a 2-2 tie with the host Montreal Impact on Saturday.
Kelyn Rowe also scored for New England, 7-1-1 in its last nine matches and 15-13-4 overall. Marco Di Vaio scored twice for Montreal (6-18-8).
• New England midfielder Jermaine Jones was among six additions to the U.S. men’s roster for Tuesday night’s exhibition game against Honduras in Boca Raton, Florida.
TENNIS
SHANGHAI MASTERS: In their first match since Novak Djokovic edged Roger Federer at Wimbledon, Federer exacted a measure of revenge with a commanding 6-4, 6-4 victory in the semifinals.
The loss ended a 28-match winning streak in China for Djokovic that dated to 2010. He won the China Open in Beijing three times and the Shanghai Masters twice.
In the early semifinal, Frenchman Gilles Simon defeated Feliciano Lopez 6-2, 7-6 (1) to reach his first Masters-level final in more than six years.
JAPAN WOMEN’S OPEN: Top-seeded Sam Stosur reached the final with a 7-6 (6), 6-2 victory against Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.
Stosur is looking for her third title in Osaka and will play fifth-seeded Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan, who beat Luksika Kumkhum of Thailand 6-2, 7-5.
TIANJIN OPEN: Belinda Bencic and Alison Riske will both be vying for their first WTA tour title when they face each other in the final after eliminating Chinese opponents in the semifinals.
GENERALI LADIES: Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic rallied past Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at Linz, Austria, setting up a final against Camila Giorgi, who defeated fellow Italian Karin Knapp 6-4, 6-2.
GOLF
PGA: Bae Sang-moon took the lead early and expanded it late in the season-opening Frys.com Open at Napa, California, closing with three big putts for a 7-under 65 and a four-shot lead.
Sang-moon finished the round at 16-under 200. PGA Tour rookie Zach Blair had a 69 and was at 204.
LPGA: Thailand’s Pornanong Phatlum birdied seven of the first 10 holes and finished with a 6-under 65 to take a three-stroke lead in the LPGA Malaysia at Kuala Lumpur.
Japan’s Ayako Uehara was second after a 69.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Kirk Triplett holed out from 143 yards for eagle on the par-4 18th hole to take a two-stroke lead in the SAS Championship at Cary, North Carolina.
Triplett finished with a bogey-free 9-under 63 to reach 11-under 133. Paul Goydos and Tom Lehman were tied for second.
EUROPEAN TOUR: France’s Alexander Levy was at 18-under 124 for a three-stroke lead in the Portugal Masters at Vilamoura after the completion of the second round in the event cut to 54 holes because of rain.
Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium shot a 67 and was in second place.
SWIMMING
PUTIN AWARD: Russian President Vladimir Putin was awarded the FINA Order, the International Swimming Federation’s highest honor, despite a series of doping cases that could result in the country being suspended from competition.
FINA president Julio Maglione said Putin’s support of aquatics “greatly contributes to strengthen the fraternity between nations … in a spirit of peace and friendship.”
The Russian city of Kazan will host next year’s world championships.
