Senior centers, or senior groups that meet on a regular basis, offer many opportunities to older folks to socialize. These gatherings also provide a venue for information to be shared. In the Lakes Region and Westbrook-Gorham areas, the Lakes Region Senior Center is open Monday-Thursday at White Rock Grange, 33 Wilson Road, Gorham. This is off Route 237.
Seniors are welcome to drop in and join others, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Several activities are ongoing and two October events are planned:
Wednesday, Oct 15 at 10 a.m., guest will be Plowshares at Community Farm in Gorham. Steve Bibula will speak about his farm and what is available from farms in the area. They offer local produce, eggs, pork and beef (including grass-fed beef). Also available are local maple syrup and products, goat milk, yogurt, artisan fresh and aged cheeses, honey, dates and other products. Flexible farm memberships will be explained.
Monday, Oct 20 at 11:30 a.m., a luncheon will be held. The menu includes Italian stuffed shells, garlic bread, salads, dessert and beverage, for a donation of $5. This is Halloween so those who attend can to wear a costume and possibly win a prize. For more information, call Avis, 892-0298.
Other programs: Interested in Mah-jong lessons or playing? Call Diane, 892-9529. Monday: Happy Hookers, knit, crochet, cross-stitch, plastic canvas. Call Bridget, 655-8509. Tuesday activities include poker, cards, board games or crafting. Call Avis, 892-0298. On the second and fourth Wednesday every month, Weight Support, Chair Yoga or exercise. Call Cheryl, 892-9879. Thursdays features bingo at 10 a.m. Call Diane, 892-9529. The puzzle table is always on-going.
Reminder: The Stewart Adult Day Center, 7 Lunt Road, Falmouth will begin operation on Monday, Oct. 20. An open house will be held at the center on Friday, Oct. 17. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be at 2 p.m., followed by group tours of the new facility until 6 p.m. The center is located in the former Lunt School building and has been developed in partnership with the OceanView community. The 4,200-square-foot Stewart Center will serve up to 25 clients per day.
