Yard sale to benefit chorus

The Greater Freeport Community Chorus will hold a yard sale fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the yard and barn at 181 Main St., Freeport, next to the Freeport Community Library entrance. Included will be household items, collectibles, tools, furniture, antiques, clothing, baked goods and more. The rain date is Sunday, Oct. 12.

The chorus is a nonprofit organization with the goal of enriching the community by promoting choral arts. The adult, mixed-voice group does not require auditions or past choral experience. New members are welcome.

CPR, AEDs topic for Woman’s Club

Paul Conley, deputy chief of Freeport Fire & Rescue, will address the monthly Freeport Woman’s Club meeting, Friday, Oct. 17, at 1 p.m., at Freeport Community Library. He will speak about CPR and the recently purchased automatic external defibrillators that are being placed in several Freeport public buildings. Conley will discuss heart-safe communities and how one can help a person with a sudden cardiac arrest. Refreshments will follow the presentation. All are invited.

Freeport free movie day

All Freeport residents are invited to enjoy a film at the Nordica Theatre, 1 Freeport Village Station, for free, on Wednesday, Nov. 5. Proof of residence in the form of a license, ID or school ID are required to receive a free ticket to any available showtime. Tickets are limited to seating capacity and there will be no rain checks. Donations will be accepted to benefit the Freeport Players.

More movies

The Freeport Community Library will be showing two movies on Thursday, Oct. 16. “Little Bear Halloween Stories,” for toddlers and pre-schoolers, starts at 10:30 a.m. “The Fault in our Stars,” rated PG-13, for grades 6 and up, starts at 2:20 p.m.

Coffee house anniversary

The Open Stage Coffee House will observe its 20th anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m., in the Community Room of the Freeport Community Library.

The Coffee House has been a place for musicians, storytellers and poets to perform in an informal space. Participants can sign up as they enter the room and should limit performances to 10 minutes or two songs, whichever is less. A birthday cake, baked by Shari Broder, and beverages will be shared by all for free. Throughout the evening, between acts, folks will be invited to reminisce about their favorite experience at the Coffee House. For more information, contact Eric Bryant at 865-0062.

‘Falcon Fest’ homecoming

The Freeport High School “Falcon Fest” homecoming weekend is Friday, Oct. 17, and Saturday, Oct. 18. Events begin Friday at 5:45 p.m. with a student and community cookout at the Performing Arts Center patio area, sponsored by All Sports Boosters and PTSO. Parents are encouraged to attend. A bonfire follows at 7:15.

On Saturday, both girls and boys have soccer games at FHS against Poland Regional High School. The girls game starts at 11 a.m.; the boys at 12:30 p.m. The varsity football team takes on Mountain Valley at the Pownal Road Field starting at 2:30 p.m. The homecoming dance is from 8-10:30 p.m. at the high school.

Soccer and football boosters will be operating concession stands throughout the day.

New enrichment classes offered

RSU 5 Recreation and Community Education is offering a wide variety of workshops and classes. Healthy eating habits are covered in new workshops with Emily Straubel, certified holistic health coach and writer of “30 Days to Quit Sugar” and “30 Day Healthy Food Cleanse.” She will also use her experience as a relationship coach in a one-night workshop called “Dating for Introverts.” More information is available on her blog, “The Red Lipstick Project.”

For gardeners there are workshops, “Planning a Vegetable Garden and Growing Vegetables Year Round,” with University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners, and “Making Cranberry Apple Jam,” with University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Food Preserver Kate McCarty, author of “Portland Food: The Culinary Capital of Maine.”

Participants can learn to make positive changes in their lives with Deb Bergeron, a certified personal and professional life coach, who will teach “Creating Happiness from the Inside Out” and “Navigating Life Transitions.”

Bean supper at First Parish

A baked bean and pasta supper will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 5-6 p.m., at First Parish Church Congregational, 40 Main St. in Freeport. On the menu will be three kinds of baked beans, macaroni and cheese, American chop suey, hot dogs, rolls, pickles, cole slaw, homemade pies, beverages and more. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Profits support outreach programs.

The church also has extended its thanks to friends, families, neighbors and tourists in the Freeport area for helping to fund the painting project. The fundraising goal has almost been reached, but more contributions are always welcome. The church welcomes all at 10 a.m. Sundays, and is open from 2-4 most afternoons for quiet time in the sanctuary. For more information, leave a message on the church answering machine, 865-6022.

Flower bulb fundraiser under way

Freeport Middle School PTC is raising money to benefit students who do experiential learning at Camp Kiev and other field trips.

Flower bulbs are being sold online at www.flowerpowerfundraising.com/campaign?campaign_id=19888. Half of the profits go toward the Freeport Middle School students’ trips. The bulbs are zoned to this area and are provided by a Maine company that offers everything from garlic bulbs to amaryllis, paper whites, tulips, daffodils, and more. The bulbs are shipped directly to customers. The order deadline is Oct. 15.

New date for Trivia Challenge

The Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce has moved its second annual Freeport Trivia Challenge from Oct. 9 to Thursday, Nov. 6, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Freeport Grill, 175 Lower Main St. Cole Tamminen, trivia master, will again be the master of ceremonies for the event.

Teams of four can enter for $150. The winning team receives $200 cash. General questions will be interspersed with those about Freeport’s past and present. There will be door prizes and free light snacks.

Health care, retirement topic of talk

Casco Bay Wealth Advisors will present a talk focused on planning for health care in retirement, Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 6:30-8 p.m., at the Freeport Community Center, 53 Depot St.

Guest speaker is Ryan McKee from Fidelity Insurance. Participants are encouraged to bring questions and concerns. Refreshments will be provided by Rhonda Prime.

Drug take-back now every day

The Freeport Police Department has installed a secured, permanent drug drop-off box in the lobby of the Public Safety Building. Residents can now drop off expired, unwanted or outdated drugs during the department’s normal business hours, Sunday through Saturday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The police department also will continue to take part in the semi-annual drug take-back program.

Artists sought ‘Sitting Pretty’ auction

The Port Teen Center is seeking artists, grade 7 to age 101, to paint for “Sitting Pretty 2015,” the annual art auction.

Each year more than 70 local adult and teen artists create folk art that is auctioned off in March, raising more than $60,000. This year the canvas is “the best of the best,” and artists will have the opportunity to paint canoe paddles donated by L.L. Bean, Russian nesting dolls, eclectic chairs, stools, small tables and vintage shelves, mirrors, lazy Susans, clocks, etc. The object pickup date is Friday, Oct. 17, from 2:30-6 p.m. at the Port Teen Center.

The First Parish Church Congregational will hold its twice-monthly Arts & Crafts Market on the front lawn of the church, 40 Main St., Freeport, Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Writers and poets soiree

Upstairs at Azure, a writer’s and poet’s soiree, will hold its monthly meeting Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m., at Azure Cafe?, 123 Main St. The group meets to give writers a forum to share their works – fiction, poetry or nonfiction – in a small group. Enrollment is limited to assure that all attendees get to participate. There is space available for two additional members. Writers can invite critiques of particular aspects of their work, but in general, the group is intended for support and appreciation, not literary criticism.

Volunteers needed

Wolfe’s Neck Farm invites volunteers to lend a hand as they improve their trail network and build new trails through the property.

Author reading

Freeport author Gar Roper returns to the Freeport Community Library on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 6:30 p.m., to read from his newly published novel, “Deadly Hypocrisy: Brenna Should Have Died.” His first foray into the crime/detective genre, the book was published in July. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

The Fire Prevention Open House is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 5-7 p.m., at the Freeport Public Safety building, 4 Main St. The Freeport Fire and Rescue and Police Departments, as well as the Brunswick Dispatch/E911 Communications Center and other community agencies, will have many interactive activities scheduled, including a smoke trailer, seat belt convincer, a fire extinguisher demo, an automatic external defibrillator (AED) demo and other health and wellness activities.

Ambulances and fire engines will be on display and K-9 Kassie will be in attendance. The Maine Public Safety Pipes and Drums will be performing. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be available for purchase.

Citizen of the Year

The Freeport Town Council is seeking nominations for its Citizen of the Year Award to honor those who have contributed substantively to the quality of the town. Nomination forms are available at the Town Office, the Freeport Community Library and can be found at www.freeportmaine.com.

Freeport Community Services is now accepting nominations for the Carol Kaplan Memorial Community Service Award named after the long-time general services director for the town of Freeport. It is given annually to an individual who embodies the mission of Freeport Community Services, and who has had a positive impact on client services and/or the organization. Stephen Cogswell of Freeport won the award last year.

Tickets available for doll raffle

Members of the Freeport Elders are raffling an 18-inch American Girl Doll named Isabelle, with 10 outfits and a wooden bed. Tickets are $2 each ticket or three for $5. There is also a raffle for a $100 Walmart gift card or a $100 Hannaford gift card. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The winners for both will be drawn Dec. 10.
