Capitals come back against Bruins, win in OT

Alex Ovechkin had two power-play goals and Troy Brouwer scored at 2:12 of overtime to give the host Washington Capitals a 5-4 exhibition victory over the Boston Bruins on Friday.

Liam O’Brien tied it at 4 for Washington (2-2) early in the third period. Michael Latta also scored for the Capitals.

Seth Griffith scored twice for Boston (1-1-1). Matt Fraser and Matt Lindblad added goals.

MLS: Jermaine Jones scored in the 85th minute to give the New England Revolution a 3-2 victory over Sporting Kansas City.

TENNIS

SHENZHEN OPEN: Andy Murray was one win away from his first final of 2014 after beating Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 6-3, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.

MALAYSIAN OPEN: Top-seeded Kei Nishikori rubbed out Marinko Matosevic of Australia 6-3, 6-0 for the third time this year in the quarterfinals.

The U.S. Open finalist will play Jarkko Nieminen of Finland for the first time for a place in the final.

Nieminen took out Pablo Andujar of Spain 6-3, 6-4 to reach his second semifinal of the year.

WUHAN OPEN: Eugenie Bouchard will be hoping for a slightly different outcome when she plays Petra Kvitova for the title Saturday in a rematch of their Wimbledon final.

Kvitova overwhelmed Bouchard 6-3, 6-0 in 55 minutes to win her second Wimbledon trophy in July in what was the most lopsided women’s final in 22 years.

COLLEGES

BASEBALL: Dylan Morrow threw a complete game, giving up three runs while striking out 14 as Southern Maine Community College defeated UNH’s club team 9-3 in a nonconference matchup at South Portland. The Seawolves improved to 10-4.

SOFTBALL: Anna Allard hit a bases-loaded, two-out walkoff single as SMCC (4-4) edged UNH’s club team 6-5 at South Portland.

FIELD HOCKEY: Megan Hamilton scored a hat trick as Providence defeated Maine 3-2 in a nonconference match at Orono. Maine opened the scoring on a goal by Danielle Aviani with an assist by Holly Stewart in the 37th minute, but Providence answered with a pair of goals. Annabelle Hamilton tied the game for Maine on a penalty stroke but Megan Hamilton scored the winner in the 61st minute. The Black Bears fell to 2-6 while the Friars are 6-3.
