WINDHAM – A Summit Adventures family entertainment center, featuring laser tag, an 85-foot-long obstacle course and glow-in-the-dark mini-golf, is coming to the Windham Mall in North Windham.

The center will be located in the former Big Lots department store, which closed in January. According to Jeff Hunnewell, the owner of the New Gloucester-based company, the new center will initially occupy 25,000 square feet of the 35,000-square-foot space.

Hunnewell signed a lease Sept. 8 with WRE Commercial Brokers, the real estate leasing company that owns the Windham Mall. It is scheduled to open Oct. 10, Hunnewell said.

Summit Adventures operates an entertainment center at the Maine Mall, featuring “extreme sports simulators,” including human hamster balls, laser tag, bumper cars and a rock-climbing wall. The six-year-old company also operates an outdoor location at Point Sebago Resort in Casco.

According to Hunnewell, activities are largely inspired by the ABC television program, “Wipeout,” a game show that takes place in a large obstacle course. The center will be open to all ages, Hunnewell said, but it is specifically geared toward older children.

“It’s kind of cutting-edge, adrenaline stuff for the kids,” Hunnewell said. “Eight- to 14-year-olds are pretty much guaranteed to love everything we have to offer.”

An installation at the Windham location called the Big Baller is directly taken from “Wipeout,” Hunnewell said. Participants will jump across a series of inflated balls, each one 5 feet in diameter. If they fall, they will land on a crash mat.

Another is the Sweeper, a foam arm that will swing above podiums. Participants stand on the podiums and attempt to avoid the foam sweeper.

The Boot Camp Challenge Course is an 85-foot, military-style obstacle course featuring a rope swing and tires.

After the Oct. 10 opening, the company will install a 20-foot-high rock-climbing wall, as well as a spiral climbing tower, Hunnewell said.

Tom Bartell, executive director of the Windham Economic Development Corp., said the new center would provide a nice entertainment option during bad weather days.

“The area is prime for family entertainment, indoor entertainment in particular,” Bartell said. “Sometimes the weather isn’t quite what we want it to be for activities, so it adds a great opportunity for families to have some fun and be active, which is what we’re all hoping for and shooting for.”

The center will be open Fridays through Sundays. Unlimited access bracelets will cost $18 on Fridays, and $28 on Saturdays and Sundays, Hunnewell said. Tokens for individual installations will cost $2.50.

Jay Wise, the owner of WRE, applauded the New Gloucester company’s decision to open a location in the Windham Mall.

“We’re obviously very excited for the area,” Wise said. “We like when anything new comes to Windham.”

A variety of indoor inflatable obstacle courses, inspired by the TV show “Wipeout,” will be installed at Summit Adventures, opening in October in the Windham Mall.
