A 60-year-old woman was killed Sunday afternoon in a three-car accident on Route 2 in Bethel.

Two others were transported to area hospitals to be treated for injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, according to police.

Route 2 was shut down after the accident and remained closed until around 7 p.m., police said.

The accident occurred around 1:15 p.m. on Route 2 between Sunday River Road and Martin Road, said Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant. The cause remains under investigation.

“We’re still piecing together what happened,” Gallant said.

Gallant said the 60-year-old woman, who was from out of state, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another person from the same vehicle was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway. A person from another car was taken to Rumford Hospital, he said.

The scene of the accident is about 1,500 feet from the spot where a New Hampshire man was killed June 29 when his motorcycle was hit by a car.

Five sheriff’s deputies from Oxford County are investigating the accident with reconstruction assistance from a deputy with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
