Freeport’s Dani Foster lifted the Falcons over the Gray-New Gloucester Patriots – with what Freeport coach Marcia Wood called “a beautiful flick” – in Gray on Thursday afternoon. That goal would ultimately prove all the offense the Falcons needed to secure the victory, though for the remainder of the game, they never lost focus, and soon notched a second point.

That 2-0 victory was Freeport’s first in 2014, and moved them to 1-2 on the season. Gray-New Gloucester, meanwhile, slipped to 0-3, and will continue searching for momentum.

“After losing a heartbreaker in OT on Friday to Kennebunk,” Wood said, “we were determined to come back and start winning some games. We were even playing without (senior forward) Hannah Williams. I was nervous how the girls would react without her on the field.”

Wood happily heaped praise on her players, including senior midfielder Abby Smith.

“She had a stellar game with her drives and really got the ball into our attacking end,” Wood said. “Different girls are stepping up each game and playing well, so once we can get the whole team stepping up and playing a full game, I think we can really win some games.”

Sophomore Bailey Coffin contributed the Falcons’ second goal, and Freeport goalie Morgan Karnes needed to make just one save, a credit to her teammates’ defense.

“I still feel we could have scored more goals,” Wood said. “But that seems to be what we’re struggling with lately finishing our plays. Hopefully this is the turning point, and we can get a few more ‘W’s under our belts.”

Freeport followed the triumph with a trip on Saturday to Old Orchard Beach. They hosted Poland Monday, after the Lakes Region Weekly’s print deadlines. Gray-New Gloucester had the weekend off, and traveled to Kennebunk on Monday.
