Gougeon’s goal lifts UMaine soccer women

Marie-Pier Gougeon scored her first goal of the season on a cross from Jordan Pellerin in the 78th minute to provide the only offense as Maine shut out North Dakota State 1-0 in a non-conference match in Orono.

The Black Bears (2-5-0) outshot the Bison (4-2) by a 13-7 margin. Claudia Dube-Trempe stopped all three of the shots that she faced to record her second victory of the season.

FOOTBALL: Bryce Petty threw four touchdown passes, leading eighth-ranked Baylor to a 63-21 rout of Buffalo in Amherst, New York.

Petty went 23 of 34 for 416 yards through three quarters, and Shock Linwood had 98 yards rushing and two touchdowns for Baylor (3-0). Hawthorne Lynx and Jay Lee each caught two TD passes.

 Gunner Kiel tied host Cincinnati’s record with six touchdown passes in his debut, and the Bearcats beat Toledo 58-34.

TENNIS

DAVIS CUP: Sam Querrey gave the U.S. a commanding 2-0 lead in its world group playoff against Slovakia with a 7-6 (6), 6-3, 6-3 win over Martin Klizan.

In the opening match of the night, American John Isner hit 29 aces in a 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-2 win over Norbert Gombos.

The U.S. can ensure a trip to the 2015 World Group on Saturday by winning the doubles when it sends out U.S. Open champs Mike and Bob Bryan.

HONG KONG OPEN: Top-seeded Sabine Lisicki of Germany advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over China’s Zheng Saisai.

Lisicki’s semifinal opponent will be unseeded Italian Francesca Schiavone, who beat Jana Cepelova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-2.

BASKETBALL

WORLD CUP: Milos Teodosic scored 24 points and Serbia reached the championship game by holding off France 90-85 in Madrid.

The Serbians will face the defending champion and unbeaten Americans on Sunday.

WNBA: Diana Taurasi scored 14 of her 24 points in the fourth quarter as the Phoenix Mercury captured their third champiopnship and first since 2009 by beating the host Chicago Sky 87-82.

SPANISH VUELTA: Australian cyclist Adam Hansen won the hilly 19th stage while Alberto Contador maintained the red leader’s jersey with two days to go.

Hansen attacked on a short uphill stretch with three miles left on the 112-mile ride from Salvaterra do Mino to Cangas do Morrazo.

PARALYMPICS

INTERNATIONAL PARALYMPIC COMMITTEE: Oscar Pistorius will be free to compete again once he has served any punishment for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

His sentence hearing begins on Oct. 13., with punishments ranging from 15 years to a suspended sentence.

PREP SCHOOLS

FIELD HOCKEY: Julia Mini, Izzy Eldridge, Tatiana Bradley and Lily Reed each scored as Berwick Academy (3-0) defeated Bancroft 4-1, during Eastern Independent League prep play in South Berwick.

Teya Adams shut out Bancroft for 45 minutes. Izzy Salvati gave up one goal while playing the final 15 minutes.
