SOUTH PORTLAND — Receiver Hayden Owen scored three touchdowns, including a 20-yard catch from Nick Mezzanotte with 44 seconds left Friday night as South Portland upset defending Class A state champion Bonny Eagle 21-14 at Martin Memorial Field.

Bonny Eagle (1-1) led 14-7 at halftime behind a pair of touchdown runs by Matt Smith, who ran 81 yards for the Scots’ opening score in the first quarter.

Smith added a short TD run in the second quarter. Owen scored in the first quarter and tied it at 14 with 4:36 left in the third.

South Portland is 1-1.

WESTBROOK 38, MT. ARARAT 14: Maurice Johnson rushed for two touchdowns and returned a punt for a third, and Bailey Ryan pulled in two scoring passes from Bailey Sawyer on the way to a 38-0 halftime lead for the Blue Blazes (1-1) against Mt. Ararat (0-2) at Westbrook.

Derek Breunig scored Westbrook’s other touchdown, returning a fumble 45 yards.

CHEVERUS 50, LEWISTON 0: Isaac Dunn threw two touchdown passes to Kenny Drelich, Joe Fitzpatrick had two TD runs and the visiting Stags (2-0) easily beat the Blue Devils (0-2).

Drelich’s first TD catch put the Stags ahead 6-0 midway through the first quarter. Fitzpatrick scored on an 8-yard sweep near the end of the quarter and ran it in from 14 yards in the opening minute of the second for a 21-0 lead.

Drelich had a 38-yard TD reception just before halftime.

Rylan Benedict, Justin Johnson and Sam Thayer each had a touchdown run in the second half.

BIDDEFORD 14, MASSABESIC 12: Casey Twomey scored on a 1-yard run in overtime and Capen Macomber ran for the 2-point conversion to give the Tigers (1-1) a win over the Mustangs (1-1) at Waterboro.

Massabesic tied the game midway through the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Mike Risti. The Mustangs got the ball first in overtime and took the lead on quarterback Weston Bergeron’s 10-yard run, but the 2-point conversion was no good.

Macomber opened the scoring with a 1-yard run in the first quarter.

MARSHWOOD 60, OCEANSIDE 0: Brett Gerry rushed for 205 yards and four touchdowns on 13 carries in the first half, helping the Hawks (2-0) build a 48-0 halftime lead against the Mariners (0-2) in Rockland.

Luc Blanchette complemented Gerry with a 22-yard scoring pass to Jake Lebel and a 49-yard touchdown run.

SANFORD 28, OXFORD HILLS 19: Tyler Eldredge was 10 of 16 for 179 yards with a pair of touchdown passes as the Spartans (2-0) defeated the Vikings (1-1) in their home opener.

FALMOUTH 55, MORSE 14: Connor Aube rushed for three touchdowns, caught a scoring pass and returned the second-half kickoff for a touchdown as the Yachtsmen (2-0) cruised past the Shipbuilders (1-1) at Falmouth.

Aube finished with 177 yards on 13 carries. George Gilbert opened the scoring with a 43-yard run, and Sean Bryant and Nico Ciraulo each added a touchdown run.

TRAIP ACADEMY 19, MARANACOOK 7: Anthony Sowell rushed for two touchdowns in the second half as the Rangers (1-1) rallied past the Black Bears (0-2) at Readfield.

Traip trailed 7-6 at halftime, but Sowell’s 1-yard run with 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter cut the deficit to 7-6.

On their next possession, the Rangers twice converted fourth-down plays before Joe Cavanagh’s 21-yard touchdown run.

A fumble recovery by Colin Macomber set up a 4-yard touchdown run by Sowell with 2:09 remaining.

BRUNSWICK 41, GARDINER 6: Alex Bandouveres rushed for three touchdowns to lead the Dragons (2-0) over the Tigers (0-2) at Brunswick.
