BRUNSWICK — Rachel Kennedy scored a pair of goals to lead the Bowdoin College field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Amherest in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game Saturday.
Kennedy put Bowdoin on the board with 2:12 remaining in the first half. She scored again 36 seconds into the second half to make it 2-0.
Caroline Fiore scored the lone goal for Amherst on a penalty stroke with five minutes left.
Hannah Gartner stopped six shots overall for the Polar Bears. Rachel Tannenbaum and Emily Horwitz combined for four saves for Amherst.
HAMILTON 2, BATES 1: Eva Rosencrans knocked in a rebound early in the first overtime, giving Hamilton (2-1, 1-1) a NESCAC victory over the Bobcats (0-2, 0-2) in Lewiston.
Shannon Beaton scored in the first half to give Bates a 1-0 lead. Hamilton tied it with 20:30 left in regulation on a goal by Sam Sherman.
Bates suffered the loss after outshooting the Continentals 30-12. The Bobcats also missed a penalty stroke late in the second half.
TUFTS 2, COLBY 0: Dominique Zarrella had a goal and an assist as Tufts (3-0, 2-0) used a smothering defense and two second-half goals to take a NESCAC victory from the Mules (1-2, 0-2) in Waterville.
Zarella stole the ball when a Colby defender slipped while trying to clear a ball, and sent a centering pass to Rachel Terveer for the goal and a 1-0 Jumbos lead just 2:09 into the second half. Zarrella added a rebound goal at 49:07.
Bri Keenan had to make just one save to earn her third shutout of the season for Tufts. Evans made eight of her 12 stops in the second half for Colby.
ST. JOSEPH’S 6, RIVIER 0: Bailey Cutler scored twice as St. Joseph’s (2-0, 1-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference) dominated the Raiders (0-4, 0-1) in Nashua, New Hampshire.
Kelsey Dumond and Effie Drew scored to give the Monks a 2-0 halftime lead. Cutler, Amanda Celata and Hayley Winslow added second-half goals.
St. Joe’s held Rivier without a shot. Makenzie Flagg stopped 12 for the Raiders.
BRIDGEWATER STATE 2, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: Jennifer Arnold scored on a rebound in overtime to lift Bridgewater State (2-3, 1-0) to a win over the Huskies (2-3, 0-1) in a Little East Conference game in Gorham.
Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead early in the second half when Samantha Crosman scored off a penalty corner. The Bears tied the game two minutes later as Brittney Field converted a centering pass from Marinna Emond.
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 4, NICHOLS 1: Nicole Matarozzo scored a goal and assisted Olivia Madore’s goal as the Nor’easters (3-1, 1-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference) stretched a 1-0 halftime lead to 3-0 in the first six minutes of the second half against Nichols (2-4, 0-1) in Biddeford.
Haley Pelletier had an assist on Matarozzo’s goal, then less than a minute later, Matarozzo slipped a pass to Madore, who scored on an open goal. Beth Sullivan added an insurance goal.
Alyssa Kowal scored for UNE in the first half. Brianna Kilborn scored the lone goal for Nichols.
HARVARD 2, MAINE 1: Marissa Balleza one-timed Ellie Cookson’s pass by Maine goalie Emma Cochran 4:32 into the second half to give Harvard (3-0) a win over the Black Bears (1-4) in Burlington, Vermont.
The Crimson took a 1-0 lead on Hannah Wellington’s goal late in the first half. Maine tied the game 1-1 when Danielle Aviani scored an unassisted goal two minutes into the second half.
Football
MAINE MARITIME ACADEMY 42, ANNA MARIA 12: Michael Fahey rushed for 241 yards and two touchdowns to lift Maine Maritime (1-0) past the Amcats (0-2) in Paxton, Massachusetts.
Jacob Doolan’s 38-yard run gave the Mariners a 7-0 lead in the first quarter before Keith Nelson, with a fumble recovery in the end zone, Faley and Joseph DiBiase added second-quarter touchdowns to stretch the lead to 27-12 at the half.
Fahey, with a 72-yard run, and DiBiase, with a 10-yard reception from Fahey, completed the scoring with third-quarter touchdowns.
Men’s soccer
HAMILTON 2, BATES 0: Alec Talsania and Jacob Frost each scored second-half goals as Hamilton (2-0-1, 1-0-1 NESCAC) beat the Bobcats (0-3-1, 0-2-0) in Lewiston.
Talsania opened the scoring just over three minutes into the second half. Just under eight minutes later, Frost controlled an attempted clear from the Bobcats and blasted a shot into the back of the net from a few yards outside the penalty area.
AMHERST 1, BOWDOIN 0: Greg Singer received a long throw from Nico Pascual-Leone at the top of the box and blasted a shot that deflected off a Bowdoin defender and into the goal at 61:26 to lift the 18th-ranked Lord Jeffs (2-0-1, 1-0-1) over the Polar Bears (1-2, 0-2) in a NESCAC game in Brunswick.
Thomas Bull stopped three shots for the Jeffs. Bowdoin’s Noah Safian also stopped three shots.
TUFTS 1, COLBY 0: Rui Pinheiro’s goal with just 4:47 left in the game gave Tufts (4-0, 2-0 NESCAC) a win over the Mules (2-2, 0-2) in Waterville.
SOUTHERN MAINE 1, WORCESTER STATE 1: Kyle Curley scored midway through the second half, and goalkeeper Charles Mull made six saves to help Southern Maine (1-4-1) earn a draw with the Lancers (1-3-1) in Worcester, Massachusetts.
After a scoreless first half, Derek Alves gave the Lancers the lead on a penalty kick in the 58th minute.
The Lancers held the lead for the next 12 minutes before Curley scored with an assist from junior Kevin McConnell on a corner.
LASELL 1, ST. JOSEPH’S 0: Conor Fitzgerald’s unassisted goal with eight minutes to play was the only shot that got pass St. Joseph’s Scott Benner as Lasell (2-3, 1-0 GNAC) eked out a win against the Monks (1-6, 0-1) in Standish.
UM-MACHIAS 2, SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 1: Juan Solares’ unassisted goal with six minutes to play was the difference as the Clippers (2-0, 1-0 YSCC) topped the SeaWolves (1-4-1, 1-1) in South Portland.
Sean Jackson’s goal 5:39 into the match gave SMCC a 1-0 lead. Frank Zeba tied it 14 minutes before the half.
Women’s soccer
ST. JOSEPH’S 5, MT. IDA 1: Hannah LeBlanc scored a pair of goals as the Monks (2-4-0, 1-0-0) beat Mount Ida (0-5-0, 0-1-0) in a GNAC game in Standish.
LeBlanc scored her first goal 6:18 into the game. Sam Peters made it 2-0 six minutes later and Kim Jordan capped the first-half.
LeBlanc made it 4-0 in the second half before Alee Bonola scored Mt. Ida’s only goal. Sarah Comtois scored the final goal of the game for St. Joseph’s.
Brooke Troup made one save for St. Joseph’s in the first half, and Amelia Tooker and Marina Cameron combined for three saves in the second half.
FRAMINGHAM STATE 4, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Isabella Desouza and Marisa Parent each scored twice to lead the Rams (3-1) over Southern Maine (2-4) in Framingham, Massachusetts.
Desouza opened the scoring three minutes into the game. She added another first-half goal before Parent added a pair of goals in the second half.
Goalkeeper Sara Sullivan made three saves to earn the shutout for the Rams. USM’s Marissa Temple made 11 saves,
BOWDOIN 1, AMHERST 0: Jamie Hofstetter scored on a penalty kick to lift the Polar Bears (2-0, 2-0) to a NESCAC win over the Lord Jeffs (2-1, 1-1) in Brunswick.
Bridget McCarthy made four saves in each half to earn the shutout for Bowdoin. Holly Burwick stopped four for Amherst.
TUFTS 3, COLBY 1: Alex Farris scored 2:17 into the game and Tufts (3-0, 2-0) beat the Mules (1-2, 0-2) in a NESCAC game in Waterville.
Jess Capone gave the Jumbos a 2-0 lead in the second half with an assist from Brooke Fortin. Colby scored with 17 minutes to play on an own goal before Mariah Harvey-Brown scored an insurance goal for the Jumbos with 1:50 to play.
BATES 2, HAMILTON 1: Alex Millstrom scored her first career goal in the 90th minute to lift the Bobcats (3-1-0, 1-1-0) to victory over Hamilton (2-1-0, 1-1-0) in Lewiston.
Dakota Donovan gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the second half. Amanda Becker scored for the Continentals in the 81st minute to tie the game.
UM-MACHIAS 3, SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 2: Brooklynne Lewis dribbled around a Seawolves defender and chipped the ball into the right corner of the net two minutes into the second overtime to give the Clippers (1-0-1, 1-0 YSCC) a win against the SeaWolves (1-2-1, 1-2-1) in South Portland.
The goal was Lewis’ third of the game. Zyrah Giustra and Katy Cyr scored for SMCC.
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 2, ENDICOTT 1: Jackie Dickenson scored from Taylor Littlefield 14:39 into the game, and Becca Murphy added a goal 30 minutes into the second half, to help UNE (4-0, 1-0 CCC) beat the Gulls (2-2-1, 0-1) in Beverly, Massachusetts.
Shannon Haley scored for Endicott.
