Play 60 kickoff at middle school
Westbrook Middle School will host a school-wide assembly on Thursday Sept. 11, to kick off the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, and former New England Patriots’ tight end Jermaine Wiggins will be on hand.
Westbrook Middle School is playing a lead role for student health by participating in the nationwide wellness initiative. Community focused and fun, Fuel Up to Play 60 is helping schools and communities support school wellness initiatives, good nutrition and physical activity, which help educate students and curb obesity.
In partnership with the National Dairy Council and the National Football League, Westbrook Middle School and its students are recruiting friends, parents, teachers and business and community leaders to join them in pledging to adopt healthier behaviors, such as choosing foods encouraged by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and committing to 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
Metro bus service sets public meeting
Greater Portland Transit District Metro will hold a public meeting Tuesday, Sept. 16, from
5:30-6:30 p.m.
, at Walker Memorial Library, 800 Main St., on the establishment of a policy for bus stop placement throughout the system. The policy may change the locations or remove certain bus stops that are spaced too close together or do not meet other guidelines and criteria.
Following public meetings and pending board approval, changes would take place in October. Bus stops slated for relocation or removal will be posted during a one-two week period prior to changes. Look for updated information at www.gpmetrobus.com.
Gravestone cleaning workshop
The Tate House Museum in Stroudwater will host a cemetery stone-cleaning workshop from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Stroudwater Burying Ground, Westbrook Street, Portland.
Friends of Evergreen and the city of Portland Department of Public Services will partner in holding the workshop. Participants will learn how to document gravestones according to standards for historical and conservation purposes, including photography techniques for gravestones.
The earliest recorded gravestone in Stroudwater is 1739.
Col. Thomas Westbrook bought the land known as the Stroudwater Burying Ground in 1727, according to the Tate House Museum, The land was inherited by Westbrook’s partner, Samuel Waldo as Westbrook was indebted to him at the time of his death and then subsequently deeded to the parish by Waldo in 1786.

Seniors to resume meetings
After a summer recess, Westbrook Senior Citizens will resume its regular meetings at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, in the Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.
A senior singing group will entertain.
Westbrook Senior Citizens are planning a trip to Indian Head in Lincoln, N.H., on Dec. 7. For a trip Jan. 23-Feb. 1 to New Orleans and a cruise, full payment is due on Monday, Oct. 27. For more information, call 854-2705 or 883-5046.
Author Kimberly McLaughlin to speak at library
Author Kimberly McLaughlin will appear from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, at Walker Memorial Library, 800 Main St.
The program is part of The Author Speaks series at the library.
McLaughlin will read from and discuss her coming-of-age memoir, “Come Running When I Call.” In her book, McLaughlin shares how a young horse became her refuge from her bi-polar father, the library said.
Free kids safety day
Westbrook Public Safety in conjunction with Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution and Westbrook Hannaford are hosting Kids Safety Day 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, in the Hannaford parking lot.
Features will include a display of emergency vehicles, live firefighting and K-9 demonstrations, and a mock crime scene visit. Ernie’s Cycle Shop and the Bicycle Coalition of Maine will sponsor a bike rodeo and safety checks.
The Michael T. Goulet Traumatic Brain Injury and Epilepsy Foundation will give away free bike helmets to the first 100 kids, along with a fitting and a safety check. Maine Freemasons will offer free child identification kits.
Free hot dogs, popcorn, water and soda will be available to those who attend.
