Alex Willete, Republican representative from District 7 in Aroostook County, has resigned his seat in the legislature.

Willette is currently the spokesman for the re-election campaign of Gov. Paul LePage.

In his resignation letter to Maine House Speaker Mark Eves, Willette, of Mapleton, said he will leave the elected position to focus on his career.

“I will be unable to put the time and effort into serving as a citizen legislator that the people of Central Aroostook deserve,” he wrote in the letter, dated Thursday.

In a brief interview, Willette, 25, said he’s looking forward to using a law degree he earned at the University of Maine School of Law.

Dustin White is running for Willette’s seat.
