SCARBOROUGH – The Scarborough Public Library has planned a series of events this month designed to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the institution at its Gorham Road location. The celebration also includes the introduction of a new logo, which was created by Scarborough resident and graphic designer Ian Weidner.

The goal behind the new logo is to create an image that reflects a more contemporary view of the library as a 21st century institution, according to Nancy Crowell, library director.

“We’ve been giving thought to creating a new logo for several years,” Crowell said in a press release. “Our previous logo featuring our building served us well. (But), fast forward 25 years and technology has changed the concept of libraries as merely physical structures.”

She added, “Our new logo better reflects our place in (the) community. The (logo) conjures imagery of turning the pages of a book and of the beautiful marsh grasses that populate Scarborough. We’re very pleased with the final product.”

The logo will begin to appear in print materials and promotional items over the coming weeks and months. A new website is also being developed with a projected launch date of October.

The celebration of the library’s 25th anniversary at its current home begins with National Library Card Sign Up month. Anyone who lives, works or attends school in Scarborough can receive a Scarborough Public Library card. All those signing up in September will receive the library’s new euro-style car decal.

The library has also partnered with Scarborough Grounds to create a special Library Blend to go with a beverage Thermos bearing the new logo. Scarborough Grounds has designated Saturday, Sept. 6, as Library Day and a portion of its sales, from 7 a.m.-4 p.m., will go to the library.

In addition, on Friday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m.-noon, the library will host a free Library Blend Cafe? event when the library Thermoses and 1-pound bags of Library Blend coffee will be available for purchase.

Then, on Friday, Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m., the library will host a concert featuring the popular bluegrass band Tricky Britches as a way to thank the community for its support during the past 25 years.

“The idea of having a bluegrass concert was initially a fun way of giving a nod to the (new) logo,” said Emily Read, chairwoman of the library’s Community Relations Committee. “But it’s also a great opportunity to bring the community together to celebrate our 25th year in this building and to acknowledge the library’s service to our town since 1899.”

Other upcoming events at the library include the Monday Movie Matinee featuring “Billy Elliott” on Sept. 8 at 1:30 p.m.; a Pajamarama party on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m.; and Family Story Times at 10:30 a.m. each Thursday.

In addition, the library will introduce several new programs this fall, including a Cornerstones of Science initiative, a Maine Community Heritage Project focused on Scarborough’s role in the Civil War, which will culminate in an online exhibit on the Maine Memory Network and Muslim Journeys film series being offered through the Maine Humanities Council.
