Football
Coach: Brian Jahna
Last year’s record: 2-6
Key players: Quinn Piland, Nick Wandishin, Marcus Devoe, Douglas Banks, Gunnar Harriman, Steven Milton, Jay Justason
Key games: Poland, Mountain Valley
Outlook: Jahna’s squad is still young, and lacks much depth, but he’s quick to highlight their strengths as well: “Most of our starters are returning players – the first time that’s happened in three years. The team started the season with a high tempo, strong character and tremendously positive attitude.” Those assets, he believes, will help the Lakers be competitive in every game.
Golf
Coach: Art Kilborn
Last year’s record: 6-7
Key players: Tyler Walker, Evan Kellough, Nick Scarlett, Sully Tidd, Evan Sanborn, Ryan Hodgdon
Key matches: Qualifiers
Outlook: Kilborn feels a mix of optimism and concern about the upcoming season. He’s encouraged by the number of students interested in joining the team this year, and happy with the level of experience his returners bring to the table. But the summer and pre-season haven’t gone off without their hitches. Athletes’ summer jobs have often kept them from team practices. Still, Kilborn feels that “we have a good opportunity to be one of the qualifying teams in our conference for the States in October.”
Boys Soccer
Coach: Michael Chaine (third year)
Last year’s record: 0-14
Key players: Michael Rust (sr., G), defensive line
Key games: Wells
Outlook: Chaine sees a clear path to a more successful season than last: “We need to be more aggressive on the attack and controlled in the defensive end,” he says. The Wells game is Lake Region’s second of the season. The teams are “well-matched,” according to Chaine, and the contest should build confidence all-around, especially important in a tough bracket.
Girls Soccer
Coach: Harvey Toews (head), Peter Webb (asst.), Shawn Rock (asst.)
Last year’s record: 2-9-3
Key players: Toews notes the value of every player to achieving success, but emphasizes the Lakers’ “strong core of sophomores and juniors.”
Key games: Similarly, Toews calls all games important, but particularly those against opponents bringing lots of Heal Points to the field.
Outlook: “Qualification for WMC playoff competition,” Toews says simply.
Volleyball
Coach: Ryan Shible
Last year’s record: 0-14
Key players: Nicole Fox (sr.), Isabelle Edwards (sr.), Michaela Tripp (jr.)
Key matches: Deering, Falmouth, Kennebunk
Outlook: The Lady Lakers are young this year, but Shible is nevertheless optimistic about their competitiveness. Fox and Edwards provide offensive power, while Tripp is a passing specialist. “These players have all been with our team for each of their high school years at Lake Region, and so have a lot of experience, energy and passion to give.” The Deering, Falmouth and Kennebunk matches come early on the schedule, and Shible calls them important “in terms of setting the tone for the rest of our season.”
