Boys Cross Country

Coach: Derek Veilleux

Last year’s record: Class B West Champions, Class B State Champions

Key athletes: Mitchell Morris, Kyle Kennedy, Mac Huffard, Alex Depke, Jared Duperre

Key meets: WMCs, Regionals, States

Outlook: “We’re a completely different team than a year ago,” Veilleux says. The 2014 Capers are young, and Veilleux expects growing pains. But the squad is dedicated, and many have trained all summer. Veilleux is especially confident in Morris and Kennedy, “who should be top five overall in the State Meet if they stay helathy.” Even though Cape will be a “work in progress throughout the season,” Veilleux is confident they’ll be ready to compete with anyone in Class B by the time championships roll around.

Girls Cross Country

Coach: Andrew Lupien

Last year’s record: Fifth at States

Key athletes: Eva Brydson, Emily Faria, Rhoen Fiutak, Hayley Doss, Sam Feenstra, Emma Shedd, Liv Palma

Key meets: Festival of Champions, WMCs, Regionals, States

Outlook: “We have a real shot to bring home some hardware this season,” Lupien says, while stressing that his squad will need to stay “focused and motivated” throughout the season if they’re to accomplish that goal.

Field Hockey

Coach: Darci Holland (eighth year)

Last year’s record: 10-5, fell to Spruce Mountain in semis

Key players: Mikayla Pinette (sr.), Julia Ginder (sr.), Caroline Garfield (sr.), Mary DiPietro (sr.), Taylor Young, Hannah Bosworth, Kelsey Allan, Charlotte Emerson

Key games: York, Falmouth, Kennebunk, Fryeburg

Outlook: Holland has high hopes for 2014. Her team has a number of experienced players – six starters from last year’s team and eight seniors overall – who should build effectively off last 2013’s successes. DiPietro in goal knows her position well by now, and should prove solid. Ginder and Pinette will anchor Capers’ defense, and Holland expects her offensive to generate more firepower.

Football

Coach: Aaron Filieo (11th year)

Last year’s record: 6-4, fell to Leavitt in semifinals

Key players: Christian Lavallee (sr., RB/LB); Devon Stanford (sr., DL/OL); Nate Weare (sr., DL/OL); Jack Drinan (sr., RB/DB); Ethan Murphy (sr., WR/DB); Noah Wolfinger (sr., QB/DB)

Key games: at Leavitt, Spruce Mountain, at Wells, at Yarmouth

Outlook: Filieo is excited for another competitive season. The team has eight returning starters – a good core of experience – but also “some key spots that need to be filled.”

Golf

Coach: Tim Desmarais

Last year’s record: 15-0

Key players: Reese McFarlane (sr.), Lauren Schonewolf (so.), Ryan Collins (fr.), Peter Haber (fr.), Max Altznauer (fr.)

Key matches: States

Outlook: After a super 2013, Desmarais is naturally optimistic. He calls McFarlane simply “one of the best” and stresses that Schonewolf not only won the MSGA Junior League Tour Championship, but also “continues to work hard and grow her knowledge of the game.” The Capers’ crop of freshmen this year is promising as well, with Ryan Collins, another MSGA Junior League Champion, making the jump to high school competition, and Haber, Altznauer and other ninth-graders all looking to break the team’s top five. “Putting cost us the title last year,” Desmarais adds, “and that’s what we’ll be practicing this year, early and often.”

Boys Soccer

Coach: Ben Raymond

Last year’s record: 6-6-4, fell in semis

Key players: Griffin Thoreck (sr., B); Eddie Galvin (sr., M); Noah Haversat (sr., M); Cole Caswell (sr., F); Andrew Kelly (sr., G); RJ Sarka (jr., F); Connor Thoreck (so., B); Owen Thoreck (so., B); Wes Parker (so., M)

Key games: Yarmouth, Falmouth, Greely, Kennebunk, York

Outlook: Raymond is hugely optimistic about the coming season. “This team should be very exciting and challenge for the top spot in Class B West,” he says. “We have a strong group of returning players who’ve been starters on this team for a number of years.” Raymond notes his athletes’ success in other sports as well; the importance of transferred skills, drive and focus is hard to overstate.

Girls Soccer

Coaches: Craig Fannan (head), Andy Strout (asst.), Don Burke (asst.)

Last year’s record: Class B State Champions

Key players: Katherine Clarke (sr.), Kate Breed (jr.), Montana Braxton (jr.), Sierra Aceto (jr.)

Key games: Greely, Falmouth, York

Outlook: The Capers are “hungry for a repeat” of last year’s success, says Fannan. “We like to play a controlled, possession-based game, playing out from the back.” Surveying the opposition, he notes his girls’ rivalry with Greely.

Volleyball

Coach: Sarah Boeckel (second year)

Last year’s record: 11-2, lost in five sets to Falmouth in the semis

Key players: Monica Dell’Aquilla (sr.), Lydia Brennaman-Libero (jr.), Madeleine Bowe (jr.), Tess Haller (jr.)

Key matches: Scarborough, Falmouth, Greely

Outlook: The Capers’ 2013 was their best year of volleyball yet, so Boeckel is understandably pumped about the coming season. “We lost some key players, but we have a good core returning and some new players that will contribute a lot to the team,” she says optimistically. The relatively young team is working hard, she adds, before noting the squad’s excellent leadership and cohesion. “We all share the same goals, and want to do as well as, if not better than, last year.”
