Pownal selectmen will meet Mondays, Sept. 8 and Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m., at Mallett Hall.

The Solid Waste Committee will meet Monday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m., at Mallett Hall.

Reminder

School starts Wednesday, Sept. 3. Drivers are urged to be on the lookout for stopping buses and traffic.

Sunday School, 9/11 service set at Methodist church

On Sept. 7 at 10:30 a.m., Sunday School resumes for children and adults at the North Pownal United Methodist Church, 851 Lawrence Road. Participants will welcome new the Sunday School superintendent, Beth Munsen.

The Adult Sunday School will be doing a Bible study called “Revival,” by Adam Hamilton. The Rev. Ray St. Pierre and Deb Larrabee will be teaching the class. Those who would like to participate can order study books for class by contacting Deb at 240-1637.

A Sept. 11 Memorial Service will be held Thursday, Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m., at the church.

The church holds Prayer, Praise and Worship every Thursday at 6:30 p.m., though there will be no services on Sept. 4 or 11. The service resumes on Sept. 18.

Supper to feature three kinds of beans

The North Pownal United Methodist Church, 851 Lawrence Road, will hold a public baked bean and spaghetti supper on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 4:30-6 p.m. On the menu three kinds of beans, spaghetti with meat sauce, potato salad, coleslaw, biscuits and brown bread, pickled beets and assorted homemade pies. Tickets are adults $7, children 4-12 years old $3, and free for children 3 and younger. The church is handicapped accessible. Suppers are the first Saturday of every month through November. Food pantry on Wednesdays

The North Pownal United Methodist Church food Pantry on 851 Lawrence Road is now open every Wednesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. The pantry never knows from week to week what it will be getting. If any farmers or others would like to donate to the pantry, contact the Rev. Ray St. Pierre, 837-0682, or Deb Larrabee, 240-1637. The pantry helps those in need and welcomes everyone.

Check out flood maps

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is in the process of amending the flood maps on which many of the town’s building setbacks and regulations are based. Homeowners are urged to come into the town office during business hours and take a look at the proposed maps to see if any changes are proposed that might affect their property. There will be forms available to appeal those changes.

Men’s breakfast at church

The First Parish Church of Pownal hosts a men’s breakfast the first Saturday of each month at 7:30 a.m., open to any men who want to come. The Rev. John Wentworth leads the discussions.

Church services

North Pownal United Methodist Church worship service is Sunday at 9 a.m. Sunday School for children and adults is at 10:30 am. All are welcome. The Rev. Raymond St. Pierre is pastor. His hours are Wednesdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Thursdays by appointment. The church phone is 688-4938. For more information, call St. Pierre at 837-0682. The church’s new website, www.northpownalumc.org, also has an email link for the pastor.

The First Parish Congregational Church, Route 9, worship service is Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Sunday School for all ages is 11 a.m.-noon. Bible Study meets at the church on Tuesday at 7 a.m. For more information, call the Rev. John Wentworth, 688-4846, or email jwent16@hotmail.com.

The North Pownal United Methodist Food Pantry received a donation of $380 Aug. 27 from Acacia Masonic Lodge. The money was raised at the lodge’s August supper.
