Blood Drive – Toby Pennels
On Wednesday, Sept. 10, a special blood drive dedicated to Toby Pennels will be held from 2-7 p.m. at the Windham Veterans Center. Pennels has been hospitalized for several weeks following a very serious accident. Anyone who can donate in his honor may call the Red Cross and set up an appointment, or just show up. The Veterans Center is on Memorial Drive, behind Hannaford in North Windham. Enter from Route 302 near Friendly’s. Volunteers to assist Red Cross members are needed. Contact Dick at 310-0390.
Baked Bean Supper
On Saturday, Aug. 30, a free community meal will be served from 4:30-6 p.m. at Christ Chapel, 37 Northern Pines Road, Raymond. The meal is served buffet style and includes baked beans, hot dogs, Kielbasa, casseroles, salads, soup, desserts and beverages. All surrounding communities and all ages are welcome.
American Legion meets
American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the Windham Veterans Center. There is a 5 p.m. social with dinner followed by a 6 p.m. business meeting. This is an important meeting to make plans for the October membership dinner and to schedule the after Labor Day removal of flags around town. Please attend and bring along a new member.
Democrats Caucus
On Monday, Sept.8, at 7 p.m., in the Windham Public Library, the Windham Democrats will be holding their municipal caucus to nominate candidates for the following seats: Town Council East District – three-year term, Town Council At-Large – three-year term; three RSU 14 School Board seats – three-year terms. There will be a regular meeting of the WDTC to be held directly after the caucus.
Senior Day at Food Pantry
Most offices are closed on Monday, Labor Day including the food pantry. Senior pick-up day will be on Monday, Sept. 8. Also, the Clothes Closet needs blankets, towels and wash cloths, toddler’s clothing, boys sizes 3-7, and boys/girls jeans size 7-16, and socks for the same age group.
Tea for You
On Tuesday, Sept. 2, the Library hosts an informal tea in the meeting room from 1:30-2:30 p.m. The tea is open to all, whether you are a patron of the library or not. All ages are welcome and folks are encouraged to drop in, share conversation, tea and goodies.
Veterans Service Officer
VSO Jerry Smith is available from 9 a.m.-noon on Wednesday, Sept. 10, and every second and fourth Wednesday morning at the Windham Veterans Center in North Windham. If you’re a veteran or a veteran’s dependent, and have questions about benefits, or other similar topics, stop in and find out more. No appointment is necessary.
VFW meeting
Windham VFW Post 10643 will meet at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Windham Veterans Center in North Windham. Note this is a change in meeting time, and there will be no supper.
Senior Lunch
The Sept. 11 luncheon at the Windham Community Cafe?, Unity Gardens, 124 Tandberg Trail will feature a choice of lobster or chicken sandwich with chips, ice cream and cookies. Choice of sandwich will be noted with your reservation. Donation is $6. After-luncheon speaker will be Michael Katz from Camp Sunshine. Call Virginia at 892-3891 by Monday, Sept. 8, for reservation. Cancellation is due by Tuesday, Sept. 9.
Bingo and More
Every Tuesday through October, the Standish Memorial Post 128 American Legion holds Bingo at the Windham Veterans Center. Doors open at 4 p.m., Bingo at 6:30 p.m., WTA pull tabs. For more information, call 642-5583. And something new has been added: The ladies of Windham’s American Legion Auxiliary Unit 148 will be selling steamed hot dogs, chips and other snacks.
Help with Medicare
On Tuesdays, Sept. 2 and 16, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar and counseling for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon. The seminar and counseling are intended to help you sort through your Medicare options, answer questions – and to help you enroll. In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. Please call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register for an upcoming seminar or to make a one-on-one appointment with a Medicare Advocate at 207-396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will occur monthly on the first and third Tuesdays at the same times and location. Windham Auto Show
On Sunday, Sept. 14, Windham/Raymond Athletic Boosters will hold the Windham Auto Show at Windham Mall (behind Hannaford) in North Windham, Route 302. Show cars entry, 7-11 a.m.; judging 11 a.m.; spectators from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission for show cars is a $5 donation; adults $5, seniors/students $3; children 5 and under, free. This will take place rain or shine. Raffles, too. This is the Boosters’ biggest fundraiser – thousands attend every year.
New Library Hours
The Windham Public Library’s hours are changing. Beginning Sept. 8, the library will be open Monday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The new schedule will ensure a consistent level of service and adequate staffing as the library prepares to participate in a new service called Minerva.
Senior Center
Lakes Region Senior Center is at White Rock Grange, 33 Wilson Road (off Route 237), Gorham, and is open Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Activities include games, crafts, bingo and exercise programs. Call 892-0298 for more information. All Lakes Region senior citizens are welcome to drop in and visit.
Charity Gala
Windham Neighbors Helping Neighbors is holding their 4th annual Charity Gala at Spring Meadows Country Club in Gray on Friday, Sept. 19, from 5:30-9:30 p.m. A buffet meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. The event includes a live auction hosted by Stef Keenan.
