Two women involved in a head-on collision on Route 196 this morning were transported to a Lewiston hospital — one of them air lifted.

Topsham Police Department officers responded to the motor vehicle crash at 7:26 a.m. in the area of Old Lisbon Road. A press release states that according to the preliminary investigation, a west-bound 1995 Saturn SL driven by Ashlee A. Cleveland, 23, of Durham, crossed the center line of Route 196 and collided head-on with a 2004 Suzuki Vitara driven by Lori J. Gates, 51, of Lisbon.

Topsham Fire Department and LifeFlight of Maine personnel responded and had to extricate occupants from their vehicles. Both women were transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Cleveland by a LifeFlight helicopter. Cleveland was listed in critical condition this afternoon according to a hospital representative. No information was available on the status of Gates.

Route 196 was closed or reduced to one lane for a total of about four hours.

The collision is being investigated by Detective Andrew Booth of the Bath Police Department and Trooper Angela Porter of the Maine State Police.
