The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Standish Fire/EMS, and the Federal Aviation Administration responded to a plane crash on Northeast Road in Standish late Sunday afternoon.

According to the sheriff’s office, the crash involved a single engine bi-plane being flown by Williams J. Worth, 43, of Indiana.

Worth had left Frenchville, Maine, on a flight path to the Sanford airport when his plane suffered some type of mechanical malfunction, officials said.

Worth attempted to land the plane on the Northeast Road (Route 35) but struck overhanging oak tree branches and telephone wires during his attempted landing. Worth further avoided motor vehicle traffic and ultimately lost control crashing the plane.

The plane suffered significant damage.

Worth suffered minor, non-life threatening injuries but was transported to the Maine Medical Center for treatment and evaluation by Standish Fire/EMS.
