A crisis counselor from the Sweetser agency persuaded a man threatening to commit suicide Monday evening not to jump off the Frank Woods Bridge into the Androscoggin River several hundred feet below, Brunswick police said.

The 29-year-old man, whose name was not released, was standing on a bridge railing and threatening to jump around 6:47 p.m. Monday. He was taken into protective custody and transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

A Brunswick Fire Department Rescue boat was launched from the Water Street boat landing and stood by in case it was needed.

The two-lane bridge serves as the main connector road between downtown Topsham and Brunswick.
