HOLYOKE, Mass. — With the regular season winding down, the Sanford Mainers were looking to gain some momentum heading into the New England Collegiate Baseball League playoffs. Well, the Mainers did just that on Friday, as they swept a doubleheader on the road against the Valley Blue Sox, winning by scores of 4-3 and 7-3.
Sanford took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second of the opener, only to see the Blue Sox answer back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.
The Mainers offense made noise again two innings later, as it scored three runs to account for all the scoring it needed the rest of the way.
Ben Wessel pitched a seven-inning complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits. He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.
Kendall Patrick, Sam Stauble, and Walker Pennington all drove in runs for the Mainers in the first game.
Matt Harris led the offense in the second game, as he drove in four runs with a first-inning grand slam as part of a five-run frame.
John Nicklas allowed just one run on three hits while pitching the first four innings of the game.
