As I have been visiting with Topsham voters at their doors, many have indicated to me that they did not know that Topsham has been affected by legislative redistricting based on the last census. ALL of Topsham is now, in this election cycle (for the November election) in the same Maine House District 54.
For at least the previous 10 years, Topsham had been divided into two legislative districts, which were numbered 60 and 65, but with the BNAS base closure and the economic downturn, Topsham lost population. As the legislature, reorganized the districts based on this census information, the whole town of Topsham was found to have the right approximate number of residents to be served by a single representative to the Maine House.
This particularly effects residents who live on Pinewood Circle, Old Farm and White streets, Alan Street, and the first part and river-side of Foreside Road who had previously been part of a district that extended all the way to Woolwich.
These residents will now have the same ballots as all other Topsham voters, and will help to elect Topsham’s one representative to the Maine House.
To restate, ALL of Topsham, will now choose a single representative this November, to represent House District 54 in the Maine Legislature.
