LIMINGTON – On Monday, while a tornado touched down in Limington, a male teenager was rushed to Bridgton Hospital, where it was determined he was unharmed, after being struck by lightning at a Naples campground.
According to Andrew Van Der Zee, co-owner of the Four Seasons Camping Area on Route 302, lightning struck a tree on the campsite late Monday afternoon following a severe thunderstorm. The boy, identified in media reports as Sean Greeley, 16, of Walpole, Mass., was situated about 20 feet from the tree, and appeared to have been shocked as the lightning bolt made contact with the saturated ground of the campsite, according to Van Der See.
“The other people that were on the campsite were about 60 feet away. They thought they saw the lightning racing along the ground through the puddles,” Van Der Zee said. “I think what it was just contact more from everybody’s feet being on the wet ground.”
The boy, who was on site for a family gathering, was taken to Bridgton Hospital, and released within two hours, Van Der Zee said. The boy showed no signs of physical injury, he said.
“The boy was actually more calm about the thing than his family,” he said. “The family was more concerned than he was about his condition.”
Van Der Zee’s family has owned the campground for 34 years. He recalled an incident from two decades ago, when a woman was struck by lightning but did not seek emergency assistance.
“About 20 years ago we had a woman and her dog get a similar jolt from a tree that was struck about the same distance away,” he said. “I’m sure that lightning has struck it numerous times. As far as people reporting, this was the first time that anybody has ever gone to seek attention.”
During the same storm, the National Weather Service determined a tornado struck the Paul’s Way neighborhood off Route 117 in Limington, downing large trees. The tornado was classified as an EF 0 with winds approaching 80 mph.
