WISCASSET — The Bargain Basement at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church has been helping people for years, and now it finds itself in need of help from the public.
The mission of the Basement is to not only help support St. Philip’s, a historic 19th century structure, but also to offering great bargains to all, and especially free items to those in particularly dire circumstances.
Now, the loyal but elderly staff has dwindled, and few have appeared to staff the shop. Open Tuesdays from noon to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., there are several opportunities to volunteer with sorting, hanging or making dump runs, not to mention learning the art of running the register.
For anyone looking to volunteer for an hour or two each week, or here and there, the Bargain Basement would be happy to have you come on board. Call Gail Swanton at 882-7184 or email stphilips@wiscasset.net.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
You can read more here about our commenting policy and terms of use. More information is also found on our FAQs.
