A donated boat is being auctioned by Harpswell Neck Fire and Rescue to support the nonprofit department this Sunday.

Valued between $5,000-$6,000, the 1988 Chaparral boat has a rebuilt outdrive motor with less than 50 hours on, a stern cabin that sleeps four, all the amenities, and “is a very nice looking boat,” to boot, said Harpswell Neck Fire and Rescue Chief Frank Hilton.

The person who donated the boat requested that Hilton maintain his or her anonymity.

“We’ve been very fortunate that we’ve been able to receive donations,” said Hilton, who noted that the department has only been running an auction for a few years.

Bidders can call Hilton until 5 p.m. on Sunday to place a bid, or can bid via email. The award will be made shortly after 5 p.m., said Hilton.

Together with the auction the department will host on Saturday the longstanding annual lobster luncheon and craft fair.

The luncheon “has been a tradition for the department for many, many years,” said Hilton, “and is one of the sources of income we have to generate funds to purchase equipment.”

Last year’s luncheon raised approximately $5,000, and a separate auction raised another $5,000.

Funds aren’t all that is needed, however.

“We need volunteers,” said Hilton. “All applicants are accepted, we can find something for them to do,” he said, noting that volunteers were needed to perform simple tasks, as well as train to be emergency medical technicians and firefighters.
