The Morris Farm in Wiscasset will celebrate Open Farm Day, a statewide annual agritourism event, with tours of the farm and gardens, chances to view and pet the farm’s furry and feathered inhabitants and learn about local agriculture.

Open Farm Day will take place Sunday, July 27, with events held at farms across the state. The Morris Farm will open its doors and gardens to participating visitors from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

“There are sheep and goats up in the barn for kids and families to meet,” said The Morris Farm’s program coordinator, John Affleck. “There are pigs in the basement and chickens, and we will be giving tours with all the little critters.”

Community gardeners as well as master gardeners of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteers program will be on hand, to take questions and give tours of the gardens.

“The master gardeners will be showing their demonstration beds,” said Affleck. “They do a spectacular job building those bed and getting vegetables growing, which are distributed to food pantries.”

Since 1998, University of Maine master gardeners have grown vegetables at The Morris Farm for the Maine Harvest for Hunger program and are donated to area food pantries. Community gardeners cultivate vegetables, some of which are donated as well.

“Volunteers continue to learn and implement organic techniques for maximum yields,” said Affleck in a press release, “using raised beds, soil testing and fertility management, intensive succession planting, and scheduled weeding, watering and harvesting.”

Visitors can also take a peek at the newly opened Morris Farm Store, which previously had sat vacant for years, said Affleck.

“It’s a volunteer-run effort, and we’ve had some great folks manning the register and answering questions about the farm,” he said. “For folks that visit, it’s really their first introduction to the farm.”

The Morris Farm Store is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Proceeds from the store go to support educational programing at the farm. Organically grown vegetables and herbs are available, as well as cheese, preserves, pickles and more, all sourced from local farms.
