ORONO — Legendary University of Maine baseball coach Dr. John Winkin died on Saturday night. Winkin coached the Black Bears from 1975 through 1996.
“The thoughts and prayers of the University of Maine and the athletics department are with the Winkin family at this time,” the university said in a release
As head coach of the Black Bears, Winkin won 642 game, including a school-record 48 victories during the 1991 season. Maine made 11 NCAA tournament appearances and six College World Series appearances during that span. He earned multiple New England and regional coaching honors.
Winkin was elected into the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2013, he was elected into the College Baseball Hall of Fame. Winkin, who coached at Colby College, the University of Maine and Husson University, won more than 1,000 games in 50-plus years as a head coach. He has been inducted into many Hall of Fames during his career.
