Benefit Chicken BBQ
The first annual New Gloucester Veterans’ Monument chicken barbecue will be held rain or shine on Saturday, July 12, beginning at noon at the Lunn-Hunnewell Amvets Post 6, 1095 Lewiston Road, Route 100, New Gloucester. The meal includes chicken, cole slaw, chips, iced tea, lemonade, and Hodgman’s frozen custard. Tickets are $8 for 12 and up, and $4 for under 12. Meals will be served until sold out.
Amvets Post 6 Auxiliary Flea Market
The Amvets Post 6 Auxiliary will be conducting its annual flea market on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Lunn-Hunnewell Amvets Post 6, 1095 Lewiston Road, Route 100, New Gloucester. New and used items, unique crafts and collectibles will be available, rain or shine.
Table rentals will be offered for $15 each. Call Joyce at 926-4693 or Sally at 926-3371 to reserve your table by Monday, July 21, for this event. Proceeds will benefit the auxiliary’s yearly projects, including support of the New Gloucester Veterans Monument. Also, a bake table will benefit their scholarship fund.
Ice Cream Making
Learn how to make ice cream at a Pineland Farms’ family program, open to all ages. First, visit their dairy cows and learn where the milk comes from to churn out this delicious frozen treat. The program runs from 10-11:30 a.m., Saturday, July 19, and is repeated in that time slot on Thursday, July 31, Tuesday, Aug. 12 and Wednesday, Aug. 20.
Buy tickets for $5 per person at The Market and Welcome Center, 15 Farm View Drive, New Gloucester. Participants are asked to arrive 15 minutes early to purchase tickets and get to their program. For more information, contact the education department at 650-3031 or education@pinelandfarms.org.
Shaker Village Folk Weekend
A variety of workshops will be offered at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, 707 Shaker Road, off Route 26, New Gloucester, Saturday, July 26. Class sizes are limited, and pre-registration is required.
You will learn about the best varieties to plant, the best methods of cultivation and propagation, harvesting, and drying of one of the Shakers’ most popular herbs at “Queen of the Garden: Lavender in the Kitchen.” Visit the Shakers’ perennial beds for this workshop from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The fee is $40.
Internationally-known woodworker Chris Becksvoort will share his lifelong expertise and techniques as a master cabinetmaker and scholar of Shaker furniture at a Dovetails workshop designed for both the beginner and advanced woodworker. Choose between either the morning session (9 a.m.-noon) or the afternoon session (1-4 p.m.). The fee is $50.
Join local, award-winning, master-carver Norm Devonshire for the basics of woodcarving, including proper use of the knife, types of cuts, methods and techniques, and sharpening from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The fee is $50.
Local, expert seamstress and quilter Dianne Devonshire will teach participants the hands-on basics of quilting from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Participants will complete an attractive game-board pattern table runner and leave with the skills to continue quilting. The fee is $40.

Summer is a time for barbecues, sporting events and celebrations. If alcohol is a part of your event, consider things from the perspective of your child or teen. Be sure to offer plenty of non-alcoholic beverages. Keep alcoholic drinks separate, clearly labeled and within your sight.

The Fourth of July is celebrated at the New Gloucester History Barn by a reading of the Declaration of Independence. Amy Fryda, 11, of New Gloucester, delivers the first third of the document, followed by the Rev. Linda Gard and Dr. Steven Rogers, who shared oratorical duties. Approximately 30 people attended this third annual event.
