CAPE ELIZABETH – Democratic state Sen. Rebecca Millett, of Cape Elizabeth, has been appointed as the Senate chairwoman of a commission to study Maine’s school funding formula.

“I look forward to working on some of the key issues our state faces in strengthening the public education system,” Millett said in a press release. “We will continue to look at ways to improve our school funding formula and achieving equal education opportunities for all Maine students.”

The Commission to Strengthen the Adequacy and Equity of Certain Cost Components of the School Funding Formula aims to address a number of funding issues, including funding for public preschool programs, Title I, support for economically disadvantaged students and professional development for teachers.

Millett represents District 7, which includes South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and part of Scarborough. She is also the Senate chairwoman of the Legislature’s standing Education and Cultural Affairs Committee and previously served on the Cape Elizabeth School Board.
