NEW LONDON, Conn. — A historic whaling ship on its first voyage since 1921 is waiting out a strong Independence Day storm in port in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
Mystic Seaport spokesman Dan McFadden said the Charles W. Morgan is “in a very, very good position” in its home port of New Bedford until Monday. A large hurricane barrier operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers guards the main shipping channel.
It’s the last survivor from the 19th-century U.S. whaling fleet.
