On Sunday at 2:20 p.m., a 45-year-old man identified as Giot Nguyen, of Portland, drowned while swimming at Wassamki Springs Campground.

According to a Gorham police press release, Nguyen was attempting to swim to a small island in the middle of the lake when he had difficulty and drowned. The subject had been drinking and was not wearing a floatation device, police said.

Nguyen was recovered from the water by family members and witnesses and taken to the island. CPR was initiated while on the island and the body was transferred to shore.

Gorham and Scarborough rescue members tried to revive the subject but were not successful.

Gorham police is investigating.
