Saint Joseph’s College students Brandon Ward, 19, and Victor Santos, 19, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Cumberland County Unified Criminal Court to one count of criminal use of explosives.

According to Tamara Getchell, a spokeswoman for the Cumberland County District Attorney’s office, Ward and Santos both pleaded guilty under the terms of a deferred disposition, which delays sentencing for a year.

The two students were charged by the State Fire Marshal’s Office with one count of use of criminal explosives in an incident at the college on Feb. 5, Getchell said. According to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland, Santos and Ward threw three bottles filled with explosive acid from a second-story dormitory window to the ground below, and two of the three devices exploded near an emergency exit at Standish Hall. No one was injured, but more than 100 students were in the building at the time.

A spokesman for Saint Joseph’s, a Catholic college located in Standish, did not respond to requests for comment.

Santos of Framingham, Mass., is entering his sophomore year at the college. Ward of Houlton will be a sophomore pre-optometry major. Both students play on the school’s soccer team.
