NEWCASTLE — Wells scored three runs in the sixth inning to get within a run, but couldn’t complete the comeback as the eighth-seeded Warriors fell to top-ranked Lincoln Academy 4-3 in a Western Class B baseball quarterfinal on Thursday.
The Eagles (13-4) took a 4-0 lead thanks to two runs in the first and one apiece in the third and fourth off Wells (10-8) starter Connor Pease.
Charlie Bell started the Warriors’ comeback with a solo homer in the sixth off Lincoln starter Sawyer Pinkham, which was followed by back-to-back RBI singles from Matt Marrero and Cody Cousins to make the game 4-3.
But Pinkham was relieved in the seventh by A.J. Oliver, who closed the game out. Wells had seven hits to Lincoln’s four, with both teams making two errors.
