SCARBOROUGH – On Tuesday voters in Scarborough narrowly approved the $43.8 million new fiscal year school budget on the second try. Residents supported the budget with 1,598 yes votes versus 1,413 no, according to Town Clerk Yolande Justice.
Even with the majority of voters approving the spending package, most of them also indicated that the budget was too high, with 1,446 saying the schools were spending too much and 565 saying the budget was acceptable.
On May 13 with low voter turnout, the initial school budget request was defeated. That caused school and town leaders to further reduce the proposed spending, although the newly approved budget increases school spending by more than $2 million.
