Both Gorham and Buxton reported low voter turnout for Tuesday’s election, but both communities validated their respective school budgets.
Gorham voters approved a $34.1 million school budget by a wide margin, 1,040-363.
The budget was approved in both voting wards and central. It passed in Ward 1, 516-178; Ward 2, 485-184; and central, 39-21.
The school budget includes all-day kindergarten.
In Gorham balloting for the Democratic nomination for sheriff in Cumberland County, incumbent Kevin Joyce handily defeated challenger Michael Edes, 359-200.
Buxton voters picked municipal officials, passed the school budget and trimmed the Planning Board size.
The annual Buxton town meeting is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, in town hall, 185 Portland Road, to approve a town budget. On Tuesday, Hiram Davis was re-elected moderator for the meeting.
Incumbent Jean Harmon tallied 418 votes and Dennis Santolucito tallied 334 in an uncontested race for two available selectman seats. Also an incumbent, John Myers had 536 backers with no opposition for town clerk. All are for three-year terms.
Voters filled several positions with write-ins. They are Ansel Stevens Jr. for a three-year term as director of School Administrative District 6; Mark Blier and Caroline Segalla, three-year Planning Board terms; William Goff, a two-year Planning Board term; and Heidi Carter and Richard Emery, three-year terms on the Budget Committee.
The $45.6 million SAD 6 budget, which was passed by district voters, was narrowly approved in Buxton, 303-278.
In a local referendum, voters agreed, 413-104, to slicd the town’s Planning Board from seven to five members.
In the three-way race for the Democratic nomination for sheriff in York County, Buxton Democrats chose William King with 137 votes over Paul Main with 48 and Dana Lajoie, 16.
With 5,912 registered Buxton voters, Myers reported that 558 total ballots were cast, representing a 9.95 percent voter turnout.
