A Portland-based trade magazine that covers the seafood industry plans to cease production of its print product and switch to a digital-only model.

SeaFood Business Magazine, owned by Diversified Communications, is making the switch to provide more timely news to its readers and reach a more global audience, said Publisher Mary Larkin.

The magazine surveyed its readers and found that they would prefer to get their news online rather than in a monthly magazine, Larkin said. The switch resulted in some staffing changes, but only one employee was laid off, she said.

“We just need to reach our customers daily instead of monthly,” Larkin said.

The magazine’s stories will be available at seafoodsource.com, which offers both free and premium content. A premium membership costs $195 for one year.

Diversified Communications has about 800 employees and produces trade publications covering the seafood, fishing, commercial boating, natural and organic foods, audio and music production, and broadcast industries.

It has completed 20 acquisitions since 2007 and launched more than 60 events, according to its website. Events hosted by the company include industry trade shows and expositions around the globe.

“We’re committed to the global industry,” Larkin said.
