Heavy rain and winds, which swept through southern Maine early Saturday morning, washed out sports events and other outdoor activities.

But sunny skies should return to Geater Portland by the afternoon as the storm moves north through the state.

Nikki Becker, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gray, said the heavy rain with gusts up to 39 mph should diminish in the Portland area by noon and the northern tip of the state by the evening. Portland had received just over an inch of rain by 9 a.m. Saturday.

Sun should start peeking through by early afternoon with temperatures reaching into the 60s.

Sunday should be sunny with highs in the 60s.
